Vices vs virtues

One of the positive things about the internet, and there are negative thing about the internet as well, is that its were I got introduced to historical fact that the Catholic Church used to instruct Church Militant in the virtues. At least the Cardinal 4.

Indeed... the internet is where I even I learned the terms Church Militant, Church Suffering, Church Triumphant.

There is a Sister in Italy who had an alcoholic family. At some point she felt it her calling to work with and reform the youth lost to drugs and alcohol. She has a unique position, radical, on why even adults become substance addicted: substance addicts do not know how to suffer with maturity.

I think there is a lot of truth to that. I would go further and say rich, middle, poor, both sexes and every race are increasingly in the USA losing the ability to suffer with maturity, to be given a formation in life in which one can carry their cross in dignity.

The "born that way..." is one of the greatest curses, lies, to hit mankind. Certainly, if both your bio parents carry the sickle cell gene, by genetic determinism you will be "born that way."

I'll even cede that epigenetics is a reasonable hypothesis, and one can be born with lesser resistances to certain things, even allergic reactions if x is introduced environmentally. Amerindians may be more pron to alcololism but not as one alcoholic in sober recovery put it, "I was born alcoholic even before I drank."

The man hunted in Washington State by law enforcement for killing his 3 daughters, apparently was raised in Southeast Wisconsin. Apparently he was an Army Ranger, according to one comment poster who claims to have known him growing up.

PTSD is not a reasonable excuse for any intentional murdering of his 3 little girls. Albeit, a number of symptoms of PTSD require more than just the virtues alone to move past or to manage. That said... a lot of America's "mental health problems" could be resolved by practicing the virtues and converting from habitual sins.
