I have mastery. I just can’t seem to sell it. By the way, looking good, Robert. Maybe a narrower tie, though??

The example with autistic people here is flawed, because autistic people have shown to be extremely talented , sharp focused in fields they get attracted to, like music , mathematics, memory..
The good doctor series is an example and there are plenty of autistic prodigies..
They are wired that way and are deeply focused on a particular field.
Not all autistic people are such though.

As if autism is a defect to learning, autism is a requirement to reach insane levels of mastery. Look at Rainman.

Yeah okay. No matter how hard I work I will never be as good as Lebron James at basketball. Luck, genetics, birthplace and wealth all play a role in your success. Hard work is the bare minimum, everyone has to work hard but some people have insane talents or access to people and money that some people will never have.

Say it's all down to hard work is just bullshit.

Anything is possible and you can master anything

Being deeply connected to what you’re studying and mastering it and being brought with privilege are not mutually exclusive. Temple grandin was born into a wealthy and educated family, she had a mother who supported her and did not choose to institutionalise her. The fact that a person with Autism is being chosen for this example seems ableist. Because her family was well off and educated, so the issue is she’s autistic? A lot of people with Autism master there interests, it’s called hyperfixation. He is leaving out so much context. This is the classic individualistic American mindset, if you try hard enough you’ll make it. I’m sorry that’s just not true. Your environment matters

I don’t know if I agree 100% with him take parents that have negative energy, and people around your neighbourhood are the same how can a child come out of the negative energy and go on to master what they want
Not easy if you are already damaged from the education, system etc

That's great, good for you, but the scientific literature demonstrates otherwise on a variety of subconscious mechanism that are genetically determined. This is such a childish perspective. Of course lifestyle is an important factor, but this doesn’t mean a significant genetic and/or environmentally can't exist either. This is the same logic people use when say, "Oh, but my Grandpa smoked till death and lived to 100." It's so confusing people can believe that maybe every other organ can be genetically limited, from increased disease risk to muscle growth, yet for some reason the brain can't despite all the literature suggesting otherwise 🤡.

Have admired Temple Grandin since I saw the film on her work about animals, mainly how cattle move in a curve motion, her work changed the lay out of abbattors which might lead to less stress for the animals, although they still have the fear of new places. ❤️

I'd just like to be fully abled. I'm autistic and ADHD but there is a huge spectrum of abilities coupled with waves of burnout and interests constantly changing.

Using a purely autistic person who has found an interest that can make an income, has lower support needs plus an adequate support network is just annoying. Not all of us get that.

If hard work was the requirement for success billions of slaves would own the world. Every succesful person I have ever met had a wildly specific "right place, right time" moment. Fort every single successful person there's a millon carbon copies that struggled for 80 years and died somewhere in the middle of the pack being completely average. It's called survivorship bias.

Wow I'm sorry but that just sounded ignorant... For someone that's supposed to know so much about human behavior he might want to go do some research before saying something so ridiculous cruel. Like artistic people are so stupid if they can do it anymore can.. mine as well been his words. When some of the smartest ppl are altistic look at Elon Musk. Yea ppl run there mouth making fun of what tf they can but it doesn't make them look cool or him any less smart. 🤓

I have a great respect for Robert Greene, and he’s my second favorite author of all time, but I have to disagree here ! Even though he may have done an extensive research, that doesn’t mean every single fact that he’s found about the people he researched will fit the profile for everyone else. Even when you look at some of the ones he’s provided in his readings. Some of them actually sold their souls or practiced divination and occult of practices whereas there were dark forces operating on their behalf. Additionally, some were positioned strategically generationally and so on. This is an entirely new era and although many principles remain the same, the time does play a factor. Schooling has a lot to do with the outcome in a persons life, just as the parents and the roles they played as well. Surely, there are many who overcome without specific elements that were mentioned above but there are many many other factors to consider

Totally naive and unscientific. Natural talent/genetics plus high IQ plus a long period of high quality practice = mastery. Miss any of those three ingredients and you could be good (and good is way above average) but never a true great.

He’s relying on survivorship bias for his anecdotal evidence for every Epictetus of which there is only one there were hundreds of millions of slaves throughout recorded history who were entered into slavery and died being enslaved. Whose names will never be known. I’m sure if he spend 16 years researching the lives of a few thousand of those people he would get very bored and have a more realistic perspective.
