I had a nice piece of plywood slated to be a cabinet top, and was sad to discover the shop cut produced a spot of tearout in a visible spot. A thin veneer (like iron-on or cut from another ply piece) wouldn't have worked but your second method of having a solid, thick piece of actual wood edging will be perfect - I'll just remove another quarter inch or so and then glue on that hardwood piece.
It'll get rid of the flaw nicely AND provide a little accent that I probably wouldn't have thought of otherwise. Thanks, that was super helpful!
Brilliant. I am learning about plywood edging and watched a bunch of videos. Your ideas are way better than any others I've seen.
Ответитьhow enjoyable is to watch those perfect edges! i like the first the most because its simple and seems durable, the 60º bit set seems like the most durable because it has more surface contact but i believe is much more expensive, i dont know if its worth the extra money for that purpose... that ending though 🤣 great video, thanks for the tips
Ответитьcool final cut @ editing! and the video is great as always! thank you!
ОтветитьI would counsel your viewers to consider the edge banding that you don't like. I've used contact cement edge banding on cabinets, bookcases and shelves that has lasted 40 years. Only an expert could tell that that these pieces are not solid oak. You can also just buy moldings of the correct species and glue and tack them on. Those will also last a lifetime. I wouldn't consider any of these methods as the best. They all work. It just a matter of how much effort you want to put into the project to make it more aesthetically interesting. Projects can be useful without being aesthetic.
ОтветитьGood video. You really know what you're doing. Great tip using the WD40 on the bits. I did wonder something. When you made the various edging cuts and then glued them in place, why didn't you align one of the ends right so you wouldn't need to trim it? Not a big deal I know, I just wondered. I'm sure you must have a reason.
Ответитьwhat router table do you use?
ОтветитьLove your Videos. You are an excellent teacher! Is that a power Router Lift?
ОтветитьHello ,any idea how to cover curved or round edges
ОтветитьThese are great methods, thanks! How do you then stain your end piece so that the hardwood edge and the plywood have the same colour?
ОтветитьWhere can I purchase a table router like the one you use in the video?
Ответитьwell..... i know am 4 years late but......could you please do all 4 edges of the same piece of ply with any edging method of your choice.......pliiiiiiiizzzzz........i really love what you demonstrated and the way it was demonstrated
ОтветитьDon't cover them, because exposed plywood is the best of all woods.
Ответитьyou are really cool, love the way you approach it and talk about it! It shows you have a passion! :)
ОтветитьDid i miss what router table youre using?
ОтветитьDang you are good at what you do. Do you have a background in journalism or advertising?
ОтветитьWhy do you ring, it's dangerous while working with power machine?
ОтветитьAny advice on edge banding for 1/4" plywood!?
ОтветитьEasiest/Best way I've found is using a Dado blade to cut a groove along the edge of the plywood about 1/3rd the thickness of the plywood, then using the same Dado blade set up, cut a squared corner on both sides of the wood strip you want to mate with the ply, cutting 1/3rd off each side. That makes a stronger bond then most without specialized (and costly) router bits.
My 2 cents on it.
You are using the Power Lift Pro at your router. Wanted to ask you if you had to do it again would you buy that lift set up again. I need a better router set up and only want to do it once. Ty watch all your videos over and over.
ОтветитьGot a wild hare up to look at manufacturing gaming tables (Ideally to sell as a side project/hustle/whatever), and this is 100% my plan to make customizable edges for the dining table top/vault cover. I can make them flush for people who like the square/modern edge look, or with a little more material, add some fancy edge profiles for folks feeling more traditional.
ОтветитьHow to get saved and be right with God for eternal life! As anyone can get saved!
1-Realize that everyone has sinned before God in some way or another.
Romans 3: 10+23 (KJB)
10. "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:"
23. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
2-Realize that God loved us, even as wicked sinners, enough to allow Jesus to pay the full price for our sins as a freely given gift.
Romans 5: 8-9 (KJB)
8. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
9."Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him."
3-Confess unto God, asking to be forgiven of your sins by accepting this free gift of forgiveness, that is given freely to whosoever does so.
1 Corinthians 15: 1-4 (KJB)
1."Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2."By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.”
3."For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;”
4."And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
Romans 10: 9-10+13 (KJB)
9. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
10."For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
13."For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Hebrews 9: 27-28 (KJB)
27."And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"
28."So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”
Revelation 21: 8 (KJB)
"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Romans 6: 23 (KJB)
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
(Lastly here is an example of what to pray to God to get saved and forgiven of your sins.)
“Dear God, I am a sinner and need saving.
I know I’m not good enough to get to heaven and I need you to save me.
I need the righteousness of your son, Jesus Christ.
I believe that Jesus is the Lord, who died, was buried and resurrected so that his precious blood can wash away my sins.
I trust in him alone to save me.
Nothing else. Not my good works or anything else. Only Jesus.
I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
You are genius!
ОтветитьTongue and groove... GIGGITY!
Ответитьhey whats your router table?
ОтветитьThanks!
ОтветитьPersonally I like my hardwood edge banding to be wide so I use dominos to attach the strips to the edge of the board. Using 4 mm floating tenons this method works well on narrower stock too.
Ответить👍🏾
ОтветитьThanks!
ОтветитьWow, great solutions. I'm no woodworker but I just use a ¾" door/window stop (That's what my Lowe's calls it)
ОтветитьI liked the 60 degree tongue and grove best and great video
Ответитьhow can i give a semi circular / rounded finish / edge throughout the length of the edge? Is it possible / worth it? i dont see anybody discussing such a requirement?
ОтветитьThat edge banding bit set is awesome. Definitely on my wish list.
ОтветитьThank you Tamar had planned on 1/4” oak banding then I realized I need a1/2” round over and as usual you have great ideas think I am going to use the spline method to add 3/4 “ band ing
ОтветитьAnother top notch instructional video delivered in a most pleasant and commanding fashion, Bravo. BTW did I see that you have a motorized z-adjustment on your router table? Would like to know more about that if my eyes were not playing tricks on me.
ОтветитьKeep it up!
ОтветитьSorry but the Iron on band is so much easier and if done right produces a wonderful finish. No reason to spend hours on any of these methods.
Ответить1. No mention of edge preparation (sanding?) prior to applying the edge banding.
2. What glue to use if applying a thin bit of the original material? Need clamps or is painter's tape sufficient?
3. Cutting a hardwood to create edge veneer the way you show is a dangerous recipe for kickback. You should push the large piece through between the fence and blade, then the cutoff can't shoot back and stab you (you do this on other method demonstrations). Getting hardwood edge banding trimmed neatly to the plywood thickness can be a real horror show without a edge trimming router bit. If you use a plane, it has to be super sharp and adjusted correctly or the grain will pull in the blade and gouge the wood (DAMHIK).
4. Cutting and fitting short pieces is not difficult. Try it on a shelf that's five or six feet long and only one pair of hands in the shop - that's another story.
5. That apparently new table saw isn't inexpensive, and the powered router table isn't priced or listed in your supplies summary. These things matter to "the rest of us" who don't make a living on social media.
6. Your evaluation of various methods doesn't address the costs of each, which matter to those of us who only occasionally face these issues. Case in point, the flush trim bit is $120 and who knows the cost of the powered router table, and the specs and cost of the router you're using.
7. You say you like the T&G, but the splined joint can be made using only a table saw. Plus points for the spline, which doesn't require a separate router bit.
Overall, this nice demo of the possibilities leaves out several important, practical considerations.
Wow, just stumbled upon your channel doing a project similar to this love what you did with all the options, definitely jealous of all the fancy tools, I’m building a game room for my daughter in one of her spare bedrooms, and I made a double three-quarter laminate desktopoak plywood on top with pine underneath for Support to have a full inch and a half thick top now I need to put edging which I purchased one by two oak hardwood and really struggling for the perfect attachment method, definitely some good tips here
ОтветитьSo cool! Many thanks
ОтветитьSome plywood has really nice layers and I love it and I will never touch the edges. Please do not listen to audiobooks while working. Peace ❤
Ответить😃😃😃
ОтветитьWhat brand overalls r you wearing?
ОтветитьGreat video! But don't let that hair get caught in the machinery! I investigated a case where a high school girl was killed when her long hair was caught in a lathe.
ОтветитьFun to see all the alternatives. I'll be sticking with glue-on edge banding only because it's being applied to finished projects that don't lend themselves to additional routing.
ОтветитьYes because we all have a massive work area with every tool in the book. If i could afford all that i'd just buy some nice furniture. All these yanks with their massive homes totally out of touch with someone that actually does diy now and then to do something rather than it be a hobby. I'm sure if I had all that gear i'dknwo how to sort ply wood out. RIght im off to the shop to spend 10 grand.
