He holds his hand over the markers (gun) mouth. As he makes the pumping motion as the ball falls out in to his hand.

The gas pressure is enough to make a hole in the paper. Therefore it is important that it is two inches in front of the marker and not two meters.

A marker makes a different sound when it is empty than if it have a ball in the barrel.
If you have the option to see the ball after he “caught” it, you should be able to see that the ball never have been fired. It will make a mark in the ball from the gas.
