Yes - they are TSLA fanboys, but the argument is well explained there.
In short, the case is more on consolidating different data types from very different sources and apply machine learning on it in effective ways.
This seems incredibly complex as inputs can contradict and there have to be many rule-based interventions put in place which prevents autonomous learning.

The decision to drop lidar was to simplify the data input and go all in on proper processing of one data source.

Not saying they are correct- but just saying the argument is more in depth than this snippet of an interview implies.

My issue with google ai is the fact that they were manipulating it for the sake of equity. I don’t trust their ai if they feel the need to control and manipulate the answers.

The special ability a tesla has over a human whilst driving based on the same logic, is that there is 0 decision or reaction delay. That being said i dont see a way that having a LIDAR detector or two communicating with the cameras can be any less safe

Having a vision only system does not exclude being orders of magnitude safer than a human. Humans have 2 eyes - and see only what is in front of them at one moment, Teslas have 8 cameras and see 360 degrees at all times. Also, unlike humans, the neural net powering the system is alert 100% of the time, never tired, never distracted and also way faster in reacting. So the assertion that those two statements by Elon are contradictory is a strawman logical fallacy in itself. Don't get me wrong, I love your content - but you seem either slightly biased or misinformed on this matter. :) I love Google as well, but as far as self-driving goes, nothing comes even remotly close to the solution Tesla has in terms of the future scaling speed potential. It's already being tested across Europe and China - without any new software, and it works pretty much flawlessly - that is the whole point of a generalized vision AI solution - once you figure it out completely - it will just work, anywhere, pretty much the same way you would be able drive a car anywhere, just better.

That was another bad take on Teslas robotaxi. Come on man, people are unsafe driving cars not becouse they can't tell the distance. It is mainly becouse of limited focus. The Tesla robotaxi setup also has advantage in better reaction times and 360° view. Better predictions and decisionmaking is not out of the question either. Lidar and other sensors can be mostly usefull for measuring distance, which is also provably not a problem for cameras if they have a brain. This makes Lidar unnecessary expensive toy at best, hinderence at worst.

Loved the commentary on $googl . It's unbelievably underpriced. I think the market is worried about search like you said, but also about the lawsuit that wants to break the company up.
