The clip of the view over St Paul's, with contrails in the sky, and the distant rattle of machineguns, is how my mother described watching the dogfights over London. She would sit on the back door step in the East End, watching and listening. She said that every so often bits of metal would land in the back garden - bits of bullets... 😮

Now I don’t know if it’s true. But I read somewhere that the RAF let some really shot up Luftwaffe bombers and fighters get back just so the Nazis knew who and what to expect when they invaded.

What this clip showcases is how in this scene (for those who've watched from the start) they can tell a story in the air, with no dialogue or even head-shots of the actors involved - just war and death and everyone understands who is who and what is going on.

Comparing this beautiful aerial footage to modern movies/TV makes you realize how short CGI still falls. Heck, even the models used in Battle of Britain look better than CGI planes in flight.

How brave were this young men. Unlike the soft, woke, wasters we have now.

The shot of the spitfire burning and crashing into the beach always looked so real to me, probably one of the most memorable scenes cgi could never top that shot

So all this to protect our “ green and pleasant lands “ , and then we sell off our rivers and beaches to foreign investors who pour raw sewage into them for our children to enjoy. My dad took me to see this film (mums was not so keen). It one of the very best war films ever. I was 9. He took me to see 633 Squadron, the longest day, the dambusters. We all went and watched ‘where eagles dare’. These films are excellent historical fact. My all time favourite, which still makes me cry is ‘carve her name with pride’. These films should be compulsory viewing at schools.
