Pa (Michael) was the Dad I always wished I had as my real father loved alcohol more than his family. I found myself going back to watch LHOTP last year when my father-in-law had passed away. He was a father figure to me the past 30 years when my Dad passed 1991. I realized last week that my TV Pa (Michael) passed away the same summer as my real Dad, I think I had blocked it out, grieving what I wished I had and grieving the TV Pa that enriched our family's lives during those times. I felt every emotion Michael played on screen, as I am an empath. I understand his need to share and give back as much as possible, I am in the same place in my life doing the same. Michael Landon (Eugene Orowitz) you truly are an angel on this earth. <3

I think he had a hard childhood life coming from such wealth and his parents raised him well with the most positive influences with their Relationship with God. Landon Jr. Had a few bad seasons he might of had to go through...But He was probably called back with the Holy spirits presence amongst him & He was and is still a wonderful person and I so admire how he held on to his FAITH that is what made him then , yesterday, and for always he will shine...& I know both of his Father's are very proud of him from above❤❤❤❤❤❤

He had skeletons in his closet that he never got help for, which stayed with him his whole life. It’s sad that he never got the proper therapy

The narrator said "Landon never claimed to be a saint". He didn’t need to! He portrayed himself as Mr Perfect for 15 years on telly! Even created a series where he played an Angel! Charles Ingalls - perfect husband. Perfect father. Perfect man.

Whereas the other male characters had to reveal their faults and imperfections.

Hugely talented man but also had narcissistic tendencies.

Perhaps escaping into his characters, had a lot to do with the memories of an unhappy, abusive childhood. Who knows.

I just find it amusing that the actor was the exact opposite to who he desperately wanted to portray on screen or who he wanted to be forever immortalized as. Until you pull back the curtain...

I realise Mark was a youngster at the time and was clearly trying to excuse his parents actions but poor Jason!

A year isn’t a short time for a child! He didn’t see Michael or bond with him but he would've bonded with his mother and brothers, surely? How emotionally scarring for him!

Yes, Michael Landon cheated on Dodie and divorced her, so she ended up being a single mother to three boys but Jason ended up being a casualty of what Michael Landon did.

I suppose Lynn never imagined he'd do the same to her, 20 years later...

He had a problem with his daughter Cheryl's substance abuse issues but he had his own addictions - he was an alcoholic and chain smoker. Both of which contributed to his pancreatic cancer.

I Love watching Highway to Heaven. My favorite TV series of all time.

I was at my Dad's cabin and came back from fishing. When I came in, my Dad said "Michael Landon died." I could tell he seemed to need time alone. That was so unlike him. Michael touched a lot of lives.

I saw Michael Landon I think last time he was on the Johnny Carson show. He did show the audience on that show how he was STILL very able to lie on the floor doing pushups&many of them&seemed to be very capable. He died seemingly shortly after that Johnny Carson appearance. It was sad

So-called "Michael Landon" wasn't even his real name. He was born Eugene Maurice Orowitz. Changing one's birthname, other than for marriage, shows disrespect of surname & family heritage.  It's especially a shame, if it's done  at the behest 

of deceitful & mercenary 'Hollywood' studios or entertainment moguls & managers. The ludicrous misrepresentation of self, for ANY reason, is simply unnecessary.

What a horrible mother he had.

I don't think his son's movie is that bad. It was from his point of view as a teenager during a difficult time in his life. "Family friends" don't really know what went on in that house before and during the divorce. I think it was cathartic for him and maybe just possibly he would be more of an expert on his own father that he lived with than anyone else.

Landon was actually a class "A" @$$hole on the set of "Little House on The Prairie. Just ask Karen Grassle.

I watched the repeats of bonanza, i watched little house on the prarie as a small kid, but Highway to Heaven was my favourite....when they got repeated from 1990 onwards over here in England, i was going out to raves taking lots of Ecstasy, and would often watch it on sunday coming down from the weekend, and E was pure then, it is an Empathogen drug, i would cry every time!! I used to as a kid sometimes! But my god...i used to wish that he was real! Going round doing really lovely things for people....i was so sad when he passed on....Godbless you Michael for being YOU!! You touched my life....RIP❤

Both Michael Landon and Victor French both died at the age of 54!

So many lovely tributes here in the Comments. Mostly positive. Some pointing out his flaws, but we all have them. And Michael was always true to us, his audience and fans. He was just bigger than life - his talent & abilities, his charisma, his looks - and a smile that couldn't be beat. Still hard to believe he's gone, I miss him.
