I think the strange man is really in fact Abraham Lincoln and he never died and instead survived and brutally tracked down and murdered John Wilkes booth and is now stalking John Marston

Here's my hope for RDR3:

- time setting is early 1800
- the height of wild west
- explore the Strange Man lore as a crucial part of story line.
- nitpicky: multi playable protagonists like GTA V (I wish at least one is native, with OP archery perks to explore more archery in game, or more dynamic play, I'm thinking maybe adapt Lozen's story for this, she's cool native american warrior, her story is good to supplement the redemption theme especially if putting it right alongside the other protagonists)
- maybe we could have cameo/easter eggs/side mission/main mission revolving around Arthur's dad or Dutch's dad etc

ofc my ideas can be shitty, just expressing my thoughts, maybe someone who can imagine this along for fun

I cannot fathom how anyone thinks he could possibly be anything but God. All of those people are just contrarians or otherwise didn't really listen to any of his dialogue. There's not even only the 'damn you!' bit but the talk of the 'appropriate authorities' and the fact that he'll always be watching, and plenty more. However I think Rockstar might have walked this back a bit for RDR2, possibly because they just weren't fans of the idea or because they feared some imagined backlash or something. Instead in the prequel they seem to be making him out to maybe be some other kind of deity.

In greek mythology there is a ferry that brings people that have died to the underworld of hades' (the god of death) realm maybe thats what he means by ferry in the poem

they may be protagonists but if you think about it ..John and Arthur are mass murderers especially Arthur from chapter one 1 to 6 i looked into the save editor and he had killed well over 1000 people...So the Serial Killer part makes me think of that

I think the idea that the strange man is Gavin is a valid theory, I remember seeing one video that said that it seemed as though Nigel had DID (dissociative identity disorder) but what if it’s not that, perhaps Nigel has had a few too many brushes with death in his life, and began to see death as a friend instead of a strange man.

I’m relatively new to the game, but I’ve had all of these run ins and tried to solve the mystery of the strange man. I’d love to see a RDR3 that gives us closure on this character. I’ve heard several fascinating theories and there are a couple I’d really like to be true.

I think he is either a fallen angel or Lucifer from the Bible. When John says damn you the strange man says many have and in the bible the people that are damned are fallen angels, the devil and humans who sin or rebel against God and haven't repented or asked for forgiveness. Im only going off Bibical Truth and since im doing that im not going to include death since that dead is the angel of death azareal and he isn't really damned he just makes the transition of life to death smooth. It says Cain died after 700 years. So that theorie would be crossed out it if we are going off of Bibical truth and knowledge

Crazy in rd1 if you turn your back to him and pullout your gun, he actually looks back encouraging you to shoot him but looks away when you put away your gun

He says he’s a accountant which makes me think death but the devil would make sense as he appears well dressed and that is a characteristic given to satan when in bodily form

I like to think that the strange man, is actually Lucifer aka the devil..

He's obviously the grim reaper casue he made an offer with Mr moon that he doesn't take his life for 200 instead of taking his life but let his daughter and grandchild live peacefully without any harm for long time , and that's why he said that many people have damed him cause nobody likes to die so nobody likes him and he doesn't know a lot about life cause his death the opposite of life , this game is mind-blowing 🙀

Chances are that John is not the first person to encounter this strange man. Like what if some of the other members of the Van Der Linde gang who died actually met this strange man offscreen including Arthur Morgen. This man probably knew Arthur was going to get TB and could foreshadow when that time would come.

i know a lot of people would disagree with me on this, but i feel like the strange man is trelawny. he doesnt have the same voice and they both look slightly different. but trelawny always disappears then shows up again. maybe hes slightly pulling the strings for the gangs downfall. idk i have a lot of different theories, this is just one of them

I don't think this guy is a demon, I was actually thinking he was the opposite and might've been God, since he was telling John to help people like reminding the man in Thieve's Landing not to cheat on his wife, and to help out that nun in Mexico, he also seemed to look down upon John for the people he killed in his criminal career, including Dutch killing Heidi McCourt. I think he's most likely Death though, due to him being around where death occurs, he was even standing on the spot where John, Abigail, and Uncle were going to be buried.

Also I have something I think 'I know you' speaks to the player I always thought to myself when looking at the title of the side missions in Red Dead redemption 1 that it was speaking to me

I feel like the Strange Man is Trewlaney... the Strange Man mentions having a kid, he knows John, John recognizes him from somewhere, Trewlaney went to Blackwater to inspect the damage, Arthur describes a man who looks like Trewlaney, Trewlaney vanishes all the time, he is present at almost every major death, he knows of Jimmy Brooks, he always told his family that he was at "the office" when he was with the gang, the Strange Man claims he is an accountant in a way, do you know where most accountants do their job? In an office. Trewlaney would know every place the Van Der linde Gang stayed.

He says to us he is an accountant, who showed up right before Uncle and John were killed. Implying he was there to "Collect" them
So what if John recognizes him from all the shootouts, a man who was there to "collect" all the people killed by the old gang. A spector who John saw out the corner of his eye but never actually seen in full. John recognizes Him because he is Death. And He is unsure of what John's Morals are, giving him tests to see where he will end up when he dies

Hey guys, just a bit of an update on this video - I'm aware it leaves a lot of available info out so I am at some point going to re-visit the Strange Man mystery and make a banger piece of content out of it including as much detail as I can gather. Hopefully with 3 and a half years extra experience it'll be leaps and bounds ahead of this video in terms of content. Fingers crossed!
