If you want to watch a realistic war movie, you must watch the movie "Platoon". I served in the military, and I was in a real fight, and I will never forget the fear, but also being aware of my comrades. As I joined the Army, we were 64 people and no one knew the others. But after the Basic training, we 64 were like one person.
ОтветитьReading through the comment section, a recurring meme is that almost everybody going to Vietnam was drafted. Not the case. Up until 1967 the Vietnamese war was more popular with the public than not. The boot camp section of the film would have likely occurred in 64 or 65 given that Joker and Cowboy were junior NCOs in Jan 1968. My understanding is that the Corps was not accepting draftee's in 64-65. Overall, during the Vietnam era, 794,000 men and women served as U.S. Marines. 448,000 were sent overseas to Vietnam. Of those 794K Marines about 5% were drafted. The percentage was higher for the US Army, but this film was about the USMC. Of McNamara's Morons, the U.S. Army received 71% of recruits, followed by 10% by the Marines, 10% by the Navy, and 9% by the Air Force. Project 100,000 soldiers included those unable to speak English, those who had low mental aptitude or minor physical impairments, and those who were slightly over- or underweight. So 10% of the 5% of all Marines might have been one of McNamara's Morons, or in more concrete terms, about one individual out of every four 75 man recruit platoons might have been a MM. Pyle possibly could have been one, but more likely he's something a recruiter fudged the numbers on to fulfill his quota. The received "common wisdom" about Vietnam isn't always true.
ОтветитьGreat reaction! It is a brilliant and brutal movie about the dehumanizing nature of war and combat and how even the tough, sometimes brutal training soldiers are put through is not enough to prepare them from the horror of it.
ОтветитьShe reminds me of a German actress !
ОтветитьThat sort of a bathroom was very common in ancient Rome. People would sit next to each other and debate politics and spread the latest gossip about the baker's daughter. They would even share the same sponge for cleaning their behinds. On the plus side, they literally had running water in their toilets. They would build aquaducts that would flow under the toilet seats and wash away the poop. So very advanced while also so... not.
ОтветитьStop watching American military movies. You dont have the base knoweldge to understand whats happening and misinterpret a lot of whats happening and why
ОтветитьSweetie, they were drafted during the Vietnam War....they weren't "thinking". These are NOT "soldiers"....soldiers are in the Army. These are Marines. Frankly, those of us who spent decades in the military don't care whether you "respect" our training methods or not. We do what needs to be done to get the job done so you can sleep well at night.
Ответитьi love that line the deadliest weapon in the world a marine and his rifle thats so hard
ОтветитьThe film is anti-war, it very well shows the ugly face of war and how inhumane they make soldiers out of people, suppressing their human essence as much as possible and forcing them to obey unquestioningly. As a result, a person either breaks down psychologically like an Private Pyle, or becomes a ruthless beast. By the way, it’s ironic that Sergeant Hartman still made a murderer out of Private Pyle, although he refused to obey him and used his own weapon against his creator.
ОтветитьPvt. Pyle was part of an effort to bolster numbers during the Vietnam war, in which people, who were below physical and mental standards were also allowed to join the army. They died at a rate 3x higher, than regular soldiers. For more info you can look up "Project 100,000".
ОтветитьToo darn many cuts. Sorry, but this totally sucks. You are very nice and I usually like your work, but this is a "fail". If ya can't stand the language, skip the reaction. Leave the tough movies to the adults. Kids are so soft these days. Grow up.
ОтветитьIm a Navy Brat, meaning my dad was in the Navy when I was born. I was actually born on a Marine Corps air base. The Navy and Marines are related. My sister and I had many friends who dad was a Marine, and yes, they are strict parents. And when you're a 14 year old boy meeting your new girlfriend's dad, and its Sgt Hartman(!), you're pretty much shaking in your boots. Lots of "sir", eye contact, posture.. and most important is: never late picking her up for a date, and never on time bringing her home. She gets home 10 minutes early!
ОтветитьI’m yeah. My dad didn’t have a choice. He was drafted.
ОтветитьThank god for that teaching in the marines , or we would be slaves to others, you should thank marines everyday for your freedom !!!!!
Ответить"It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, no"
yes you should visit Japan and South Korea! Lots of Sacred temples in Japan! I was born in Japan, always loved going back to visit, wish to visit South Korea and Vietnam some day!
ОтветитьR. Lee Ermy, Gunny was a great man. Beloved by every veteran.
ОтветитьGeez, your reply is clueless, in that you cut out most of the true barbarity of USMC (and other military branches. War sucks and this is why the movie this exposes why war sucks. BTW, Vietnam USAF Disabled Veteran here.
ОтветитьThe DI was a real Marine...and that is how it went back in the day.
ОтветитьOne thing you have to understand is that everyone in your platoon in Boot camp might be right beside you in combat. If someone can't take getting yelled at and verbally abused and can't do anything right you really don't want that person watching your back or standing guard while you are trying to sleep. The slowest and weakest member of the platoon forces everyone else to move at their pace and puts everyone else life in danger. Combat sucks. Combat is nasty. Combat is sheer terror. Sometimes it's a matter of inches. You are forced to do things you would never dream of doing or would never want anyone you love to go thru. It's sad that the world is how it is. I wish it were different.
ОтветитьTo add to what
@StevePaur-hf4vy had said... The Drill instructor must first break down the individuals during the 1st half of boot camp, then build them into Soldiers the last half. This does promote a disciplined unit. Y
The draft during Vietnam did not take into account a persons mental status, draftees were just numbers in a war needing soldiers.
Before the war ended, the military learned that soldiers not mentally fit to serve were a detriment to missions ( something youd think was an obvious assumption )
Something thats difficult to reconcile with, but something that ought be acknowledged, is that many men choose to join the military, knowing full well, that they may have to put their lives on the line for complete strangers in a foreign land.
Something it doesnt seem many people realize, is that before Vietnam split in two after fighting against French colonization since they were colonized, just after WWII and in the same time frame as the Korean war where Korea was going through the same story, Ho Chi Minh- eventual leader of Communist North Vietnam had asked America for help against the French. America didnt want to fight France, Communist China and Russia stepped in, armed N. Vietnam and the Vietnam war was on.
America didnt step in until the Gulf of Tonkin incident ( which has its own conspiracies) , but was a false flag event used to bring America into the war in 64'? long after it had started.
America was supposed to be helping the South Vietnamese, but never fully committed to the war, and American men were thrown into a no win situation with no real goal except for what seems, as in Korea, to try and keep Communism from spreading.
In the end, S. Vietnam lost and Vietnam became a full communist country. South Korea basically won.
You can see the results, Vietnam remains a poor country that has to speak in whispers for fear of saying the wrong thing in front of the wrong person, and Korea....thats an easy one to see which one ended up better off.
Check out Biloxi Blues (1988).
ОтветитьActor Vincent D'Onofrio gained 30 lbs to play this part. Never lost it. Is a genius. Check them out in the movies The Cell (2000) and Men In Black (1997),
and Law & Order: Criminal Intent
In 2001, D'Onofrio took the role which has likely given him his greatest public recognition: Det. Robert Goren, the lead character in the TV series Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001).
Every country the US goes to we bring Pepsi and Playboy. That's why the Muslim says they world hate us.
ОтветитьWe got sucked into that war defending French rubber plantations. Destination based on freedom and throwing off the yoke of imperialism get sucked in the fight award defending a monarchy.
ОтветитьEisenhower warned us about the military industrial complex. The US has 60% of its GMP devoted to the military. Since we make all of this military gear it has to be used. So it doesn't matter whether we win or lose a conflict just so we use up all of the military equipment stored in warehouses. Or we can sell our outdated military equipment to any other Nation on the planet.
ОтветитьLove Adam Baldwin. Especially in the series Firefly.
ОтветитьMost photographed conflict in US history. Another one of McNamara's brilliant ideas. But instead of showing War like we saw it on television. It showed the real horror of War. And we hippies rose up to protest against it. Yeah I'm a 65-year-old baby boomer.
ОтветитьBest lines: now one horse in the whole country. Something basically wrong with that.
ОтветитьCensored half the movie out.
ОтветитьTerrible reaction!!!
ОтветитьEmma Awesome Video Today!!🔥🐐🐐💎
ОтветитьThank god I still got the dvd…this movie is good
ОтветитьLee Ermey improvised the entire scene in the barracks. Emma!!!! ❤️🥰😍💘💖
Ответить❤❤
ОтветитьUS Marines are...different!
ОтветитьAll of the scenes in Viet Nam were shot entirely in England. True.
ОтветитьNON-VOLUNTARY MILITARY SERVICE
At this time US had Draft System /
A lottery based your SS NUMBER after 18 Years Old 🤷🏽♂️👋
I’ll be watching 📺🤠
Don't know if this commenter is French but it reminds me I'd like to see another movie like this that covers the end of France's involvement in Vietnam, we replaced them after they lost their taste for fighting there (as did we in the 70s).
ОтветитьEmma talking to her kids after watching this: What is your major malfunction! What are you trying to do to my beloved house ! I want you to clean that bathroom So good that your grandmother would be proud to take a tinkle in there. Marching them to school :Up in the morning with the rising sun going to react to films till the school day's done.
ОтветитьMarry me, Emma.
ОтветитьI was fortunate enough to get to meet R. Lee Ermey, (Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann), a few years back. He was actually a Marine Corps Drill Instructor. In reality, he was wonderfully polite and kind.
Ответить“This is my rifle, this my gun” why is that necessary?
Someone called their rifle a gun.
Which as any soldier will tell you are different things.
What always bothers me about the end is that any infantryman knows it’s SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) when dealing with a sniper to fill the area with smoke and advance under that cover. When 8Ball is hit he should have been covered in smoke and people should have hauled him back to cover where Doc could work on him.
Then they should have called in some mortars, especially if Cowboy suspected an ambush.
Stop making stupid faces for a thumbnail. I get rid of that. You're to pretty to do that.
ОтветитьOne of my best childhood friends went into the military (on purpose for a longer time) while I was conscripted (yes in Austria we still have conscription) and he told me that they taught officers that the military has to do all these dehumanising tactics because contrary to popular believe most people don´t want to kill other humans.
The Germans had "problems" in their conquered territories to find people to actually do the killings. Lenin regularly got frustrated because the people he put in charge never did as much torture and killings as requested. Even the American Army in WW2 found that it was a small percentage of soldiers that did most of the killing. We who are taught history by the survivors of 20th century Europe rarely get to learn the "problem" of the military: Most people don´t like to kill. Yes there are always killers but when you get handed 100 average people it is actually quite hard to get them all to kill someone.
Imagine the military as the answer in social technology to the problem that most people actually don´t like to kill but .. society needs to find a way to make them anyhow.
There's a reason the United States has the most effective military in human history. It isn't because we're treated nice in basic.
ОтветитьCruel, sharp and strict...is exactly what is necessary for combat training... If you want to be SOFT AND WEAK and die in battle and get your team killed ??? Well, then of course, live in your bubbles of innocence and selfishness...or, join an American military combat team and learn why you don't understand anything about this film.
