There's a theory that Theoden is still a bit pessimistic due to the after effects of Saruman's mind control, it still hasn't completely worn off yet. Also the fact that he didn't have time to mourn his dead son.

This is why King Theoden will always be my favorite. He knows it's all over, yet he will still lead his people. He loves his people more than himself. And if for a moment, he could sacrifice his life for everyone of them, he would.

Sometimes encouragement is needed more than complete honesty. Theoden knows that and its something I think he teaches Aragon in this moment. Even if Aragon is older and teaches him sometimes I think in this moment Aragon learnt something important. Something he probably took with him when he gave his speech at the Black Gate.

It breaks your heart considering gondor took the full force of mordor but he still feels betrayed. Also leading when there was no hope.

Bernard Hill is easily one of the most underrated actors of this trilogy.

Aragon was right about them not coming to destroy crops, villages or bricks, they were coming to kill PEOPLE, every single one they could find. Theoden was doing the best he could with the resources he had and under the circumstances.
