Why must black be capitalized while white must remain lower case?

The issue is not so only the “the” but the combination of “the” and the plural “s.” Whereas “the French” sounds o.k., “the Blacks,” “the Jews,” etc. does sound dehumanizing. Compare “Germans” (neutral) to “the Germans” (not). Words with no plural “s” get away with it. Am I wrong?

Really lame. AP is right or at least on the right track. (Note that I said "AP," not "the AP." AP in this context is a name, not an object. Reciting a quote from "the AP" makes as much sense as quoting "the Ben Gleib,") A phrase like "the poor" suggests that people who are poor share a set of universal characteristics beyond their economic status, unlike the alternatives. It"s the same reason that we have largely ditched, for example, "the disabled" in favor of "people with disabilities." Or is the Ben against that, too?

If I believed that there was anyone here who legitimately wanted to learn and understand why Black is capitalized and white not, I would explain it. There is a very good and cogent reason. But I don't sense that sort of seeking.

I have to agree. I leave out the word “the” a lot of the time when not necessary. It’s a bit mid evil in English, but it works.

The thing about whites and Blacks in capitalization is that Caucasians and whites are two different things , in that that Caucasians are a race; and the group of whites is a sub group of people who would identify as white, but not necessarily Caucasian.

However, Black needs to be capitalized, because Black peoples is a singular group of anyone with pigment in their skin from ethnic groups, brought to America from Africa. Just as capitalizing Jews means those who are from the Jewish race and concordantly could also be from the Hasidic faith.

At least that is my understanding.

I think a lot of people completely misunderstood this. They are saying to not use THE when describing people not for company names etc. I thought it was pretty obvious. Like saying "Jews" compare the "The Jews" might have a less negative impact on the listener. You can then see how "Internet" and "The Internet" does not suffer from the same effects.

Well, "white" isn't a real race. It includes groups that sometimes aren't considered "white" such as ethnically Jewish people, Irish, Italians and the-oops * census inclues middle easterners (Arabs, Turks, Persians,etc) as "white" as well. This is something people need to talk about but won't. Generally all people whose ancestors descend from certain parts of Africa regardless of tribal origin or nationality are "Black." AP should discuss this. Also Marx never defended trannys so where does calling "political correctness" or "wokeness" or whatever they want to call it, marxist even come from?

It's all about context and how it's used. Simply eliminating or reducing use of the word "the" really doesn't help ANYTHING. The Associated Press should rethink this, or should I say "the organizations and people known as the Associated Press." WTF?

completely missing the point. the ap is a stylebook, they should be dealing with style. this is a question of contents. whether your contents are racist or not, style won't make a difference. "the jews are ..." isn't more or less racist than "jews are ..."

AP is just adding unnecessary complication to the concept of "people first" language. With this concept, instead of saying "handicapped people" one would say "people with disabilities" or "people with different abilities". Instead of saying "black people" one would say "people of color" and so on. Dragging "the" into it is just silly.

And I thought the objective of the AP Stylebook was to simplify English for poorly-educated readers and viewers, such as using the noun 'assault' in place of the verb 'assail', as increasingly few are acquainted with the latter word.
