Not only is a changeling a fairy but it's a fairy that died during birth. The fairy's mother grieves so hard for the loss of her child that his spirit finds it's way back but full of hatred and hunger. So the mother sends a creature (I forget the name now) out to swap her baby with a human one.

The changeling myth is more likley a byproduct of post partum disorders like ppd or postpartum psychosis. Thats why the advice for what to do if you child gets replaced by a changeling is to take care of it anyway and make sure you go on walks in the woods and scream at the trees to get your baby back.

The colours were swapped because the daughter was not as valued as a son. The son had to be protected from abduction/harm. Bridesmaids were originally dressed identical to the bride because evil spirits were attracted to happiness. The veil was also designed to hide the bride"s face for the same reason. The norwegian word for changeling was bytting and in the old days, if you called someone that three times. the person could legally kill you for the insult.

I found a lot of authors from the period to be self aware, using terms like "changeling" to refer more to an undesirable character in the child more than representing that the author subscribes to fairy-magic.

In Sweden they believe they were trolls not fairies and the parents left them in the woods. Sadly this happened to babies with Down syndrome or other conditions that affected the babies appearance.

It’s even worse because after Esmeralda’s mother goes for the streets looking for her child, she hears a baby crying in her house. She goes back inside thinking her little girl had been returned to her only to find little, deformed Quasimodo crawling on her floor.
Poor Quasi and all, but to a grieving mother finding a deformed child instead of your perfect little girl must feel like the worst mockery ever.
