I think the little retaining wall is looking very good. But doing all the work by hand? Did you really need the exercise? Either way good job!👍🏻

Would you be able to apply that stain with a pump up garden sprayer? The consistency looks about right. Multiple very misty coats should do the trick. It’d be like staining a fence. Another option might be to try a low pressure fine finish tip on your airless sprayer.

Over 50 years ago I worked 2 years for a stone mason, 3 years for bricklayers before that, the Stone walls are all still standing, we put drain pipes where wall is 4' + tall and always used gravel behind going back 2' to about 5' or more depending on wall height, just take a wide 3" Chisel and chip all four sides of the rock that faces, using all rock chips as drainage gravel behind wall, the whole deal is to eliminate water pressure from behind by making the water gravitate to bottom, to then be expelled, usually thru a french drain pipe, and burying first course at least 4" to a foot, and to make the rocks Facing presentable, as if new, excepting the middle area of the rocks that show - cause the aging is the accent, or patina, beyond that keep the heavier rocks on lower courses and keep telling yourself that your crafting an artwork, and when using chisel don't even worry about hitting your hand with hammer, it doesn't even hurt, cause once you learn that hitting your hand with hammer in exactly the same spot, for a second time, pains to make you climb the walls, a third hit like the second trains to not to hit hand with hammer ever, to the point that hitting the correct spot happens naturally, be it a nail or be it a chisel, plus the air blower is useless, the rain cleans to where the wall just keeps looking better and better, day after rainfall day !

The China bugs are round looking - just like the oblong lady bugs, ( been becoming a nuisance for the last 7 years across the nation ) easy to distinguish, I'd try my Stink-Bug eradication method, take an old style floodlight light bulb or an old-style 200 watt light bulb and screw to old style trouble-light that can handle the heat without becoming a fire hazard, then' at night turn off all lights except the Flood light, that needs to be set inside something Fire-King or Corning-Ware, anything old that will not burn or melt made for stovetop cooking, just place light bulb to touch bottom, while considering safety relating to the heat created, then in morning unplug light, after it cools, take the Corning-Ware dish and dump the bugs outside, to set it ready for another nights use, cause a few bugs didn't attract-to, and the dead bugs dont smell at all, cause they are dried-out to the consistency of paper, again I only used for the stink-bugs, but I went from hundred flying all about to on third day only killing a few, then did again the following years !

In a previous life, I was a construction inspector. In state retaining walls there are 12 to 20 foot strapping metal. About 4 inches wide, that is bolted to the retaining wall with compacted pea gravel behind it, for weight and drainage. I wouldn't expect you to get to technical. However, you could incorporate 6 foot straps anchored to your stones in a stair step fashion along the wall, and it would be tremendous in strength and hold back potential small slides.

Prolly already mentioned elsewhere, but make sure those are not Asian Beetles (and not lady bugs). They will latch on to the inside of your pups mouth, and they are very bad for your pups (can cause burns in mouth and gastro issues). If you squish them, they stain with a yellowish color, and they are pretty hard to get rid of, but they make a spray to get rid of them. If they are lady bugs, yea, leave well enough alone, but if they are Asian Beatles, you want no part....

oguys did really nail it on the stain for the cabin. I looks amazing! While I do understand the desire to build an entirely "hand built" retaining wall. I personally would not have been able to do it with the excavator available. The only reason they were hand built before is because they did not have excavator's 😊 I also really admire your commitment to getting the look you are after, even when that means taking it all down and doing it again. 👏👏

Personally, I think you’re way too overcritical of your rock walls. Human beings have been stacking rocks since they started plowing up the fields to plant crops and maybe even before that. Granted, somewhere along the line, some very old civilizations put together some very fancy rock walls look for the most part when it’s just one farmer in a field or maybe a few farm hands, they were just randomly stacking rocks as they pulled them out of the way of their plow as they cleared the field they would make a plateau on a hillside or rock walls around their farmland. They would also use them as foundation stones, and if you’ve ever looked at a foundation made of rubble and rock, you would probably think your walls are a masterpiece!

After a bit of practice and exposure, you begin to find the stones speak to your hands. They tell you where they need to go. It’s a kind of magic.

I love the deep warm tones of the new stain; so much better than the one you went with originally.

JudithB I like stacking rocks too, but at least mine are flagstone!!! I put in several walkways, a patio and a rock wall, and still have flags stacked around. The few boulder type get put in flower beds as accents and to keep my dog from digging huge holes. I finally gave up on getting pallets to stack firewood on this year when the alternator went out on the way to town. I am cleaning the stacks area, so I can start moving firewood up and get it stacked and covered. Very dry here too but temp dropped today!!

Hi there Heath, Cedar, and Family
I think this isn’t the latest video as I’m watching the movie of the Kentucky_Grass being installed. Yes I do think you will definetly have the best grass imaginable. Even if small parts do die it’s amazing how fast the living will spread and you will have your beautiful grass. About the ‘Credit_life’. I’ve lived on or near the lower_lifestyle for the past 39 years. And a long time before that but in the past 39 yrs I alone no husband to dictate or order my finances. I can’t say it hasn’t been easy but having a car - for years old & dinted at times car, we had a reasonable lifestyle. The now Adults still have heaps of advice on how much better it should or could have been. Thank God we lived most of that time in State Govt Housing — I still do. My rent here in my small’Cave_like’ unit - Bed_sitter’ is a whole $106 a week. The rent is governed by money coming in — irrespective if it is a pension or a two parent working household but very reasonable no matter how big the income. When my older daughter Rachel married back in 2004 I advised them to put their names down for a rental of some sort. They Boo-Hooed me and said they could do better. Well now they are living with the husband’s mother. They lived in EXPENSIVE rentals untill 18 months ago. They have 5 children aging from 4 to nearly 18 years. I have lost count of how many homes they have moved in and out of over the years and I GUESS the debt is up past their eyes. I could not live like that. Even life with my husband — the only debt we ever had was the house and 1 car we actually bought 6 weeks befor our wedding. He was always ‘IMPROVING’ his Tools. But that was cash ONLY. I did buy for him a motor bike on a lay-by system. This gave us the advantage of 2 transport when needed it also enabled me to get my motorbike licence. Something I never regretted. Any way I guess ‘the kids —Rachel & Chris’s will have their own home after his dear Mother passes. I hate debt. I’ve found a novel way of saying. I’ve PRE-PAID my electricity so even when the bill comes — it is already paid. This money is sent straight from my pension to the electricity company — same as my rent. I believe if you don’t see it go it’s no pain.. My rent money is 5-10 dollars a payment more that what they need but my electricity I pay $90 per fortnight. This is heaps more than needed. Every now & again they notify me they are sending me a cheque for ?? Over $1,000 but that goes into a specific a/c with the old-fashioned bank book. It gets wonderful interest levels. It just sits there, I try to forget all about it — unless there is a critical need somewhere. Often I think I’m broke but I just “THINK” about that saved money and count the days to pay day. All is well. My younger daughter is very different to her sister. At the moment she is SAVING big time this year for small but commercial Embrodering machine. She’s had a regular one for some years and done many different things esp with her Quilt making. Often placing names on quilts or special love messages, and cute graphics but knows the scope is very limited compared to a 10 thread commercial job. With that she can set and forget the machine. Beautiful work in any man’s language.
I’d better go, I have seedlings to plant — — it’s SPRING here Down-under.
As ALWAYS Lots of love, wishes and Prayers from Ellen , Queensland, Australia ,

When sod sits, it starts to “cook”…even in the coolest weather. I have pulled sod off a pallet that has sat for just a few days and it was uncomfortably hot…the smell of baking grass is also unmistakable. Once this happens, there is no saving the grass…but you already know this!

Way back when, I wanted to buy a car. I was in high school and had a part time job. This was my introduction into reality. I had a good bit of money saved - but not enough. Then I discovered that no institution would lend to a kid. Finally I sought the wisdom of my father. Dad said “tomorrow you are going to skip school and I’m taking the day off from work”. The next day, we stopped at a “Small loan” company. They wrote down the amount borrowed, the amount to be paid back, the monthly payment and the interest rate. Next stop was the Bank. They did the same thing. After that Dad and I had a “business meeting” at the local coffee shop. It didn’t take long to see the actual cost of borrowing money and the different treatment between the loan company and the back. Dad explained the Bank only lends to “qualified” borrowers, while the loan company lends to “less qualified” people. The interest rate is a reflection of risk. Dad said that he knows where I can borrow the money and pay a reasonable interest rate. He wrote down the new figures and ask if I could handle the payment? I could and dad said that he would lend me the money - with a couple of new wrinkles. First, I had to keep enough money in my savings account to pay for three months of payments. The second one was that once it was paid off, that I continue to make payments into an account so that the next time I wanted to buy a car - I would have cash. Lots of lessons learned during this period of my life.

Heath don’t worry about the sod. It’s Kentucky blue grass so over time it will spread and fill in. Just continue to water, fertilize, and most importantly MOW. And mow at least a couple times a week if possible. Grass wants to grow and if it can’t grow up then it will grow out and get thick and full! I promise if you do those three things, your grass will look beautiful. I have the lawn to prove it.
