Taking jabs at Coach Greg while he promotes maintaining around 15% for most men and higher for those who don’t have energy at a that level of bodyfat... okay. I like the point you made about girls caring for abs though haha

18% crew checking in. I think I'm in a happy spot. Not having hunger or sleep issues, not too much fat around the midsection. Work capacity is pretty good. I'll take it :)

Saying “maingaining” is contradictory in itself IMO ... stay at a 350-500 kcal surplus as a natural and you’ve got a good recipe for gains . Never even have to change it as long as your properly calculating your maintenance needs .

I disagree with the blood work and body fat. I have better blood work at 14% for years vs when I was 20% for years. The diet stayed the same. The life style was the same. The difference was the bf after I cut the calories to lose 6% bf. If I ever go back to 20%, I feel like my blood work would show my health markers get worse. Such as cholesterol, testosterone, rbc etc

I just dont feel like getting fat is worth it to add 300grams of muscle and 10lbs to my bench, i'm 28, 5'10, lifted for half my life, and at this point i doubt i'm ever going over 180lbs for the rest of my life, i mean there is always something to improve without getting fat.

What's wrong with volumous food, sweeteners and guar gum (or other high in fiber thickeners)? Especially the last one, they are often used in the kitchen even by not fitness obsessed people.

Wish I would have known this a year ago. Feels like I left a lot of gains behind trying to be shredded, but I realized I didn’t have enough muscle and mostly just looked skinny with clothes on. You live and you learn, I guess.

Yeah nah, maingaining down here is really not an option... Just simply cause you'd have to be on top of your diet all the time

If I eat below maintenance for a week for any reason I immediately lose some muscle

So if you try to maingain and are either to busy or lazy to eat perfectly all the time its gonna be more of a recomp or super super slow cut... Which will get you ripped, but not big

This was an interesting video for me to watch, I've always been quite lean with very visible abs just due mostly to great genetics, but I also was trying to maintain that physique by eating only what I thought was what I needed. At the start of this year I started to work out again and put on some muscle mass, but I tried to maintain my current eating regimen and started to find myself always feeling tired and not really gaining at all after a few months. Eventually I figured out that I was not providing my body with enough of the necessary ingredients for muscle growth and overall health and started to eat more, albeit in a controlled manner as I do track my calories and macros, but I have now gained almost 20 pounds and have noticed my abs starting to fade. At first this worried me, and asked the exact question you mention in this video and was thinking that I was putting on too much body fat for my goals, but I have been fighting the urge to cut back to the 10-12% range for the fact that I feel better and have more energy.. and have made MUCH better gains. This video was a great push to keep going my current path, thanks!

Natty here: I've been sub 10% for a whole year but I've put on about 12lb lean mass in that year... It's all about timing certain macros, and intelligently lean bulking and doing enough cardio at the right times and optimizing recovery. I also lift for over 2 hours 5 days a week, race my bicycle 50 miles, and walk for 3 hours with a weighted vest @ 4.5-5 mph. Also, these weren't newbie gains either, I was lifting on and off for years prior and already reached my old peaks before this period. I will admit I'm naturally pretty lean but when I stopped lifting I did gain about 40lbs of extra fat and basically got to skinny fat territory before this. My 1 year b4 and after is astounding, I'm a completely different human now. The limit is your mind and how much you want to achieve your goals...

I’ve only ever recomped and “maingained” because cutting would wreck me... I steady maintain around 15%... but yeah it is slow and kind of wheel-spinny. I just added 100 calories to test the waters, which is less than a 5% surplus, but man I dunno. Cutting really isn’t healthy for me psychologically or otherwise... I would be happy to stay around 15% but I’m stalled out as fuck.

I have been doing the maingain yoyo dieting for about a year now. Exactly how you described it. My abs started to get blurry so I lowered my calories again. I have gotten a bit stronger and I 100% gained like 1-2kg of muscle at most. Gonna up the calories and stick with it.

When your body fat is too low, your hormones are all out of whack and your body is more interested in not starving than building muscle.

Really defined six-pack abs aren't remotely normal on anybody's physique, in terms of physiology. Bodybuilders only produce that kind of physique because they are willing to do risky stuff to get there.

I think the word "lean" was distorted anyway. More and more, you have to be leaner and leaner. Why is 15-18% not considered lean? Even 20% to a degree.

I partly believe its because body fat is miscalculated so frequently in the first place. Most people think I'm leaner than I think and so on. I could be wrong, but there is no way I'm 10- 12% with lower back and lower ab pooch lmao. Just...no lmao.

Serious question: To improve (weighted) calisthenics strength performance, should I also bulk and cut? Will I benefit from it in the long term, even though I'll stagnate or regress in the short term? I'm making good progress as it is now, so I'm inclined to toward not changing anything. My numbers are going up and my static holds are improving

We're almost in 2025 and we've still got people conflating bulking with getting fat.

I think what people like scientific snitch miss is that if you're eating in a surplus and the scale is going up then you're bulking regardless of if there's a significant change in bodyfat or not.
