"A Song of Ice and Fire (commonly abbreviated as ASoIaF) is an ongoing series of epic fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996.
The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses others are introduced, such as the cold and menacing supernatural Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both thought to be extinct by the humans of the story. There are three principal story lines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years before, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, the three story lines become increasingly interwoven and dependent upon each other."

Why skip 5 years? Better time management could have achieved something similar without a huge time gap. Medieval warfare could be slow, a few months here, a few months there, George could have accomplished something like a 5 year gap without all the baggage

I don't think a 5 year timeskip would work but maybe a 2 year timeskip could

If Maester Aemon dies during the time skip then Maester Pycelle and Walder Frey should die too. If Walder Frey dies then that should probably kick off the Frey civil war. That would also explain what why the siege of Riverrun hasn’t been completed yet, the Riverlands would be in absolute chaos. That chaos would be made worse by Lady Stoneheart and the brotherhood without banners killing Lannister and Frey men. Jamie could spend that time trying to deal with all that chaos and Brienne could search for Sansa while saving smallfolk, slaying bandits, being hosted by lords and generally making a name for herself as a knight while failing to find Sansa.

There are so many opinions the fandom would instantly shut down for years, but now that we've realised the series is never being finished people are starting to listen to them.

Such as the fact Feast and Dance have lost the plot and scrapping the Megaprologue was a terrible idea. The series is unfinishable now.

For an example, if the series really did finish in 2 books, this would be Dany's book estate:

Book 1: her life, the Dothraki and the birth of dragons
Book 2: Qarth
Books 3, (4) and 5: freeing, ruling, and wasting time in Meereen
Book 6: the Dothraki again, Meereen again, (and he was gonna do Asshai too), Volantis, Pentos, Dragonstone
Book 7: ruling Westeros, the civil war, meeting all the characters, the North, the final battle.

And the house with the red door has to fit in there somewhere. What a mess

Meanwhile, it's been 2 books since he split the Greyjoy Prologue and we have JUST NOW managed to finish the Feast Ironborn story. 2 books to tell 1 prologue.

Abandoning this timeskip doomed ASOIAF in the long run. George couldn't untie the Meerenese Knot, he churned out one subpar book sliced in two (AFFC/ADWD), tasked Dumb and Dumber to write the ending for him on TV, and laughed all the way to the bank while conning us into thinking the books would be finished.

I think the reason a 5 year gap would have been bad is “what would the others be doing for that 5 years?”. Just sitting around? I really like them as a plot element because they are a sort of ticking clock element that pushes some urgency into the narrative.

I think three things were needed to solve the 5 year gap problem, instead of a full gap of smaller years have the timeline of Feast and Dance take three years with smaller gaps between chapters of some Pov, second split the story of Dance in two smaller books one for the North and one for the East, allowing for the Battles of Fire and Ice to fit in the books and other deleted ideas, many people dislike the split by character but with the story at the most expansive point having a trilogy set on diferent parts of the world was needed, and the third change would be delaying Balon's death from Storm to Feast, his dead started a butterfly effect with the Kingsmoot and the lost of Moat cailing that if delayed could keep some plotlines that didn't work with gap frozen while other plotlines like the training arcs or Jon going to hardhome take place, you would have to make some changes like Stannis sieging the dreadfort for a time and the abandoning the siege for some external reason like the Weeper attacking, or having Brienne lose even more time somehow in her search for Sansa

OK Varys killing Pycelle needs to be video, because he’s doing it to frame Tyrion, the Martells, get in good with Young Griff, avenge the people of King’s Landing for Tywin’s sacking, destabilise the realm or he just doesn’t like Pycelle.

Brienne’s issue are pretty simple to fix; she adventures for a year or two looking for Sansa, then Lord Selwynn dies and she inherits, she returns to Tarth to become the Lady of Tarth and sets affairs in order, then after appointing a Castellan she can finally return to her mission

Arianne trying to make Myrcella Queen of Westeros, because of dornish inheritance and thinking she has a good shot because she has 6 supporters and might win the support of House Yronwood is honestly so comically stupid it's hard to believe that it is actually real and from a major pov character that is supposed to be somewhat serious.
That plot deserves cutting more than Davos on the Three Sisters and feels the most filler out of everything in the series.

for Stannis: if he gets the loan from the iron bank, he could be building up his power by bringing mercenary companies in in those 5 years. Open more forts, fortify them, harassing the Boltons from the North and preparing the ground for a knockout blow.

I am just some part through, but fAria probably would have given birth, to at least one or two kids, it could be some nameday celebration for the future ruler of the north? And catching Rickon and keeping him secret hostage, planning to murder? Or it would be northern conspiracy with Rickon and Manderlies against fAria's son and Boltons? Or fAria giving birth to just girls so far, being currently pregnant, everyone believes it's gonna be a boy, she can't stand it anymore (maybe babygirls misteriouly died) and Reek finally helps her to escape from the nightmare

Imagine everyone in the North being like 'what happened to those White Walker guys they were like right on us and now we haven't heard from them in 5 years". Then smash cut to Danaerys first chapter, there's like a million refugees coming into Mereen, they say they're from Yi Ti or near Yi Ti idk, they say the Five Forts fell, 100 million dead, the whole kingdom wiped out, and they say it was an army of freaky blue eyed dudes and 10 million dead soldiers and mammoths. Turns out the White Walkers on Westeros were just on a side mission getting re-enforcements from the wildlings for the main attack on Yi Ti and now they're gonna turn back on Westeros but like a million times more powerful. All the refugees destablize her relatively peaceful rule because all the old slave trade stuff is kicking back up now because they cant resist kidnapping all these refugees, Danys crashing out, maybe going a little mad queen ... then at the end of the chapter Qaithe appears, shes like 'ok I get you were trying to save Mereen and that was chill of you but now you see things are way bigger than just you being queen, you need to follow your destiny and get back to Westeros STAT or we. are. all. going. to. die."

The point of Quentyn Martell - I thought- was to be a subverted expectation anti-prince. He’s a fairy tale prince if literally nothing went right for him. He’s not the heir. He’s bad looking . He has no charm. He does no great deeds. He does not get the girl. And then the dragon kills him. So yes politically his death means Dorne won’t be very pro Danerys but I thought that was more of a side effect than the point of his story.

wait, I think Varys literally says something along the lines of "someone, somehow will find a way to blame the dornish", so the mirror-killing of two people related to the incident would be a way to have the dornish framed and half forced on (f)Aegons side

Ngl Bran visiting himself as a child in the past sounds awesome. Esp considering it can be explained as him revisiting old lessons to train. Like imagine you can always see the past, you won't ever need to write notes or ask your teacher to repeat your lessons, you can just look in the past.

Or maybe he would be looking into the past to try and figure out what happened to Jojen only to realize he ate him

I personally like the idea of Jon cultivating a mentor relationship with Stannis during the 5 year gap, mutually proving each other and their merits for kingship. Then the Watch wouldn't kill him right away because of Stannis's protection and their relationship would be an extra layer of perceived betrayal which would further justify a mutiny.
