On the second day two of its visit, the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) team today conducted the safety inspection from the Reasi to Katra stretch of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL).After the inspection, the CRS team returned to the national capital to submit the primary report to the Department of Railways.An official said that the team headed by Commissioner of Railway Safety Dinesh Chand Deswal conducted the primary inspection of the track and tunnels from Reasi to Katra after the completion of track work on the railway line.
The USBRL (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link) project takes a giant leap toward completion with the successful track laying in Tunnel T1/33, the final major hurdle. This milestone marks the culmination of years of effort to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via rail, promising enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and a brighter future for the region.

The Indian Railways has been working relentlessly to complete the ambitious Katra-Banihal railway route, a 111-kilometer-long rail link, connecting Katra to Banihal in Jammu and Kashmir. In this extensive railway project, the most significant challenge lies in the construction of the USBRL rail tunnel T1 in Katra.
Tunnel T1 of the USBRL project passes through the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT), a geological structure in the Himalayan region characterized by dolomite formations that tend to seep water, posing a considerable risk during tunneling. In 2017, during the initial excavation, water ingress issues led to the suspension of work. However, when the project resumed, careful technical measures were employed to ensure the safety of the excavation process.
The 3.2-km-long single tube tunnel, located at the foot of the Trikuta Hills in the Katra-Reasi section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project, has been described as the most difficult section of the project.
The railways also changed the alignment of the rail line to ensure that only a small portion passes through the tricky terrain, which the engineers had described as the worst conditions ever encountered in building tunnels anywhere in the country
The Jammu–Baramulla line is a railway track being laid to connect the Kashmir Valley in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir with Jammu railway station and thence to the rest of the country. The 356 km railway track will start from Jammu and end at Baramulla. It comes under the jurisdiction of the Firozpur railway division of Indian Railways' Northern zone. The 359 m (1,178 ft) tall Chenab Bridge lies on this line, which once completed will be the tallest railway bridge in the world.
