Thank you for the wonderful tips! I bought my R5 in the last week, and I’m anxious to get out and find some wildlife.
ОтветитьJan, do you everytime upgrade the firmware or do you use one specific?
ОтветитьI just got my R5 this month. While first playing with it with a friend I tried taking a picture of a bird deep in a tree. I really fought the focusing points trying to get between the leaves and branches. I ended up calling Canon Tech Support to see how to select an individual focusing point. (Exact same issues you described.) The agent I spoke with was clueless, which surprised me since this camera has been out for nearly three years!
I'm so glad I came across your setup video! I'm a pretty advanced user, having progressed through various Canon models over the years and also having a 1DX Mark iii. But the R5 is a little different beast to setup but I think I'll really like it.
Thanks
Hi Jan, I used this video when it came out and set my R5 up accordingly, brilliant! but have let my son use it for portrait shoots recently and some of the settings now changed. Anyway is there anything you would now add or change since two more years with the R5? I’m shooting ospreys in a couple of weeks would appreciate any extra tweaks or advice cheers! Ken
ОтветитьI have been a Canon man since 2004 and now have an R6 to go with all my "L" glass. Thank you for showing me how to set up double back button focus for normal focus and also eye focus on the star button. Jan you are very clever!
I might buy an RF mount 800mm f11 tele lens for birding so I can get the fastest fps. I have my wildlife and nature settings set on C1 and my events and weddings settings set on C3. I just kept the settings the same except for animals on C1 and people on C3
I cannot believe that the sensor is so usable up to 25,500 ISO it's amazing!
Not sure if I just missed it, Jan. Which dial do you assign for Exposure Compensation? Thanks.
ОтветитьHow to recall Custom shooting modes? If I assign Still and Video toggle to m- Fin button the C option is not showing for any other button
ОтветитьHey Jan,
After 2 years of using this camera - do you still use the same settings presented in this video?
Best,
Just switched my autofocus case based on this video and I'm very happy with it now. I always felt like it was jumping around too much with birds in flight. Thanks for this helpful video
ОтветитьVery helpful video, I've just changed from 7DMkII to R5 with my 100-400 MkII lens and an RF 24-105 at the moment to shoot birds. The learning curve is enormous for me, I'm not sure if I'm getting back focus or I'm using "your" bbf wrongly, I acquire the bird (AF-ON), then press the eye detection/focus button (*), but the focus sometimes jumps to the blue squares jiggling around. With the (*) button do I need to hold it continuously or one press keeps the eye detection activated until a new subject focus point is chosen with the AF-ON button? Cheers mate.
ОтветитьDoes the "subject to detect" option set to animals only apply when eye detection is used?
I'm setting up BBF specifically AF-ON button for normal focusing without eye detection, but set to1 Point AF. Will "subject to detect" animals be ignored and use "none"?
I set up the * button with eye detection.
I'm a bird photographer and want to be able to prefocus on perches and nests without the R5 AF searching for an animal.
Thanks!
ОтветитьJan - Thanks for showing how to setup both the AF and the Animal tracking buttons, it really helps. certain features we miss out but the intrinsic details is worth listening and using on the hardware
ОтветитьHola Jan :) Tus videos son muy buenos. Se agradece la claridad y detalles. Tengo la R5 con el RF 100-500 hace 4 meses, es una cámara fantástica. Ver tus videos me ayuda bastante. Me suscribo y continuaré viendo. Saludos desde Talca, Chile.
ОтветитьHave you tried the «Tornado EOS» utility for Canon? It's a cool program, really simple to use.
ОтветитьThanks Jan - I've learned so much from you.
ОтветитьOne setting I have yet find an explanation to is the metering timer in Red #7. What is that for and what is the proper setting for it? Thank You!
ОтветитьHave you updated this post?
ОтветитьThis has been such an incredibly helpful guide since i got my R5! I play with settings from time to time but keep coming back to this video as a reference. Curious if you’re still using AF Case “1” with tracking sens: -1 and Accel/decel. tracking: -1? Thanks!
ОтветитьThanks a lot for all the information!. I have de R 7 . I don´t know if I can do the same settings. No much videos for the R7 in You tube.
ОтветитьHi! Where can you find out the remaining space or shots on card during shooting? Please help. Tks
ОтветитьYour video and channel are so information. Many thanks for taking the time to do it. I really appreciate it.
ОтветитьThank you for this. I have just got my R5 - invaluble information here.
Ответитьafter viewing this, I got my first R5. Thank you Jan
ОтветитьBrilliant. I've just bought an R5 and gone through all your settings.
ОтветитьIs this still the best set up info on the R5?
ОтветитьHey Jan, do you know if the R6 has those video customizations like the R5 does?
I can’t seem to find eye detection auto focus for video on the R6
As well, I can’t find the “record button” to go from stills to video like you have set up 😭
Thank you so much for this video, I am thinking of upgrading my camera and getting a eos R5 and this will really help me
Ответитьyou did not feveiw the ec function and what button or dial you used.
ОтветитьVery informative video
ОтветитьHey Jan, nachdem nun der Nachfolger raus ist warten bestimmt viele auf das Settingupdate zur 5RII 🙂Gruß Micha
ОтветитьThank you Great video!
ОтветитьGreat video @Janwegener . can you think of a way to have a custom
Button to switch focus mode the expanded box for quickly shooting birds in flight? Using the 600mm f4 this would be handy as a single point doesnt grab unless right on the money!
This is amazing! I learned so much about my new camera! Thank you!!
Ответитьis there a way to have to assign RECALL function to a button... so ifg you have 2 very different ways for AF you can change it easy ?
ОтветитьPlease slow down…..
ОтветитьHi Jan. Thx for a great video. I try to use the FN-button to switch between video and foto, as you illustrate in the video. But my R5 don`t switch back to foto, after I have touched the FN-button once. Have there been any changes to this function due to uppdates of the firmware? Sincerely Kenneth M
ОтветитьAwesome review, thanks. I just moved from my R7 to an R5, and I was confused by the differences in AF systems. I know I'm late to this conversation, but I assume that the Eye Detect AF that you assigned to AEL* also invokes subject tracking once it detects the eye? Thanks again.
ОтветитьBrilliant! Just got a barely used R5. Used your recommendations to set up. Thanks!
ОтветитьJust got the R5 and the menu is a little daunting. This video helped tremendously and I can't wait to give some of these settings a try. Thank you.
ОтветитьExcellent help! Thank you!
ОтветитьThis is a good video — clear explanations and good visual. Thanks.
ОтветитьThanks Jan! I just acquired an R5 as a second body and was really struggling to get the initial auto focus to pick up birds in flight. Using your settings resolved my issue.
ОтветитьHelped me set that AF system. Brilliant :)
ОтветитьChrist Loves you

John 3:16
The 2 button set up is brilliant! As a fashion photographer with group shots eye focus would hunt if they were close. Street photos would also improve with this.
ОтветитьHey brother I just set my R5 up how you did in this video yet somehow the camera isn’t auto-focusing at all now. Of course, it isn’t supposed to unless I press the spot or eye tracking back buttons but when I do, it still doesn’t come into focus. I can confirm that the focus worked fine when I took the camera out of the box earlier/as default and the 100-500mm lens is still set to auto and all that. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!
ОтветитьDoes the electronic shutter give overall worse image quality? I didn’t find that it did. I don’t use it for super high speed shots but it works fine without wearing out the shutter mechanism.
ОтветитьEh ccb, piak piak ni bu hard² one lol
