I am definitely not waiting for a damn self-driving Revolution I happen to enjoy driving my BMW and even now he has a commercial that says luckily driver necessary. my God self-driving vehicles are going to destroy the freedom that we call driving. and speed limit? on open Interstate like I 4 in on open Interstate like for on Florida and other areas in the south really don't need speed limits because they're straight well-designed and like the before-mentioned BMW are very safe at high speeds as far as cars are concerned. well anyway between November and April when the snowbirds come to Florida excuse me I mean the fucking snowbirds come to Florida is when the highways get dangerous especially the dick heads from Canada Canucks

It's funny we have car commercials that are like "this car can go up to 200 miles per hour" because of the fact that we have speed limits. It doesn't matter how fast your car can go.

The highway I drive everyday has a speed limit of 100 km/hr, but usually I go around 140 to 150 km/hr if traffic allows. The speed limit is meaningless to me.

Speed limits should be conditionally raised based upon current conditions and traffic volume. IMHO most accidents are caused by speed combined with inattentive driving and reckless driving in the US. Too much rage, cell phone/texting, and passive/aggressive driver restriction of traffic flow. Laws not enforced in the US , not poor highways are another cause. North Americans drive many more highway kilometers and we are very bad drivers. Driving quality went down radically in the 1970s when the 55 mole per hour speed limit, increased interstate highway miles, traffic volume increase combined to make drivers stop obeying driving rules. Laws, common courtesy. The increase in volume with the radical urbanization and not enough road enlargement, caused frustration to rise for suburban drivers commuting to the city with no reliable public transportation.

I live in Germany. Highspeed makes only fun by night when nobody is on the street. My normal speed on day is 150 kph (93 mph). But I like it more to drive in the states. It's cruising and you can watch the country and eat you're burger during driving... But I think the traffic is a little bit to slow. Really to slow (sleep). 85 would be okay. It's not to fast and not to slow. Greetings

Speed limits are never reasonable unless you're in the city or a school zone. Other than that, let people drive however they want.

Like seriously, why should I have to drive only 75 when the road condition is good, no traffic, and COMPLETELY STRAIGHT?

As long as I am only risking my own life (which you do every time you're behind the wheel) I am totally fine with driving 120 MPH (around 200KM/h)

If people actually used the roads properly there'd be less traffic and more of a reasonable initiative to increase the speed limits making travel quicker. But people are stupid, naturally.

F.Y.I E=½mv² so if you double your velocity, you quadruple the kinetic energy of your vehicle, making crash exponentially more dangerous.

140 km/h is slightly faster than 85 mph. The 85 mph section in Texas should be 140 km/h. Approximately 87 mph. Replace the 85 with the 87 on SH 130 in Texas.

Speed limits are set in order for cops to be able to legally give you citations. Highway speed limits are in fact irrelevant. Why? In heavy traffic areas such as NY, LA, etc, most of the time during the day you can't even drive at speed limit, because you're stuck in traffic. Then if the highway isn't too busy and especially in the rural areas ( such as Montana, Nevada, ) you can go much faster and in those cases, most drivers won't excede whatever they feel comfortable. So, interstates outside of the major centers shouldn't even have posted speed limits.

A number of conflicting ideas in here, and stated as fact although the evidence contradicts what you've said. For example, for every 1km/h increase in speed you don't get a 3% increase in crashes. A number of studies in certain situations have demonstrated that increasing a speed limit has led to a reduction in crashes, and reducing speed limits has led to an increase in crashes. In many cases, raising the speed limit would actually be SAFER. Likewise, the setting of speed limits is not as rigorous as you've presented here - there is clearly political and financial mileage to be had from a lot of the changes.

Most Interstate highways can handle 100+ very easily. There is a push for 150 MPH limits, on Interstates, with appropriate re-engineering, of course.

I feel like driver error and experience is the cause of crashes. For example, the autobahn has no speed limit and people who go fast know they can so they don’t go outside their comfort level unlike people who are forced to go a certain speed trying to go fastee

Abolish the speed limit. Instead, replace them with safety signs, suggested speed, higher gas prices, reduce reliance on cars in urban areas, and of course, religiously obey and enforce the "keep right accept to pass" law. Every car is different, every driver is different, every hour in the day and year is different. No speed will be the right one. Instead of trying to decide what speed to set, we should enforce more universal safety rules.

The government sends out a person to drive around, and then wright down what they think a reasonable seed is. Then The government brings it to the police, and the police tell the government to lower the speed by 30 KPH.

The speed limits should be 10 mile faster ..... example 65mph should be 75mph on freeway s . And on little streets that have lower speeds only 5 mph more . Example 30 mph should go to 35mph . I hope this can be done . Thanks .

one of the most important parts about setting speed limits is to try and limit "speed spread" - it's a lot harder to deal with widely varying traffic speeds than homogenous ones - and homogenous speeds mean that you don't get excessive (dangerous) passing maneouvres because everyone's going more or less the same speed and so, don't feel "held up"
Urban speed limits are generally "too high" - simply on pedestrian survivability issues - and lack of protection of non-motor vehicle users is coming to the fore even in the USA - a recent NY State court ruling resulted in a $20 million payout for a local authority ruled to have ignored repeated warnings about the safety of a suburban road, resulting in the death of a 12 year old cyclist

Speed doesn't cause accidents speed VARIANCE causes accidents. You kind of eluded to that in the 85th percentile however you seem to keep saying speed kills. If that's the case any kinetic energy in a 3,000 pound vehicle is deadly including 5 to 10 miles an hour. That said if we know that cars kill at any speed then the goal is to make them not kill. So a consistent speed with low speed variance regardless of speed including above 70 is much saver than inconsistent speeds with higher speed variance. Also I noticed you displayed the yellow speed limit sign as if it was an enforced speed limit. If you read you drivers manual you would know that yellow speed limit signs are suggested speeds not enforced.
