Flying in and out of Maine isn't really that bad. I just take the one hour flight down to Logan Airport in Boston and you can get good flights to anywhere from there.

Bugs are pretty localized in Maine. Yes, if you go inland you will likely get carried away by mosquitos and if that doesn't happen you will need a transfusion due to all the blood loss to the ticks, mosquitos and black flies (not to mention a 6 month course of antibiotics). On the other hand, where I live on the coast the only bugs I see are lobsters.

Housing is nuts on the coast. Nobody rents year round since the landlords can make a lot more renting the houses out to tourists by the week for five months. Where I live there are ZERO rentals longer than a week available. Also the cost of buying a house varies a lot by location. Inland, and particularly up north you can buy a house for under $150K, but unless you like working as a wood cutter or potato farmer, there is no work. On the coast a million will get you a place a mile or so inland, but you will pay a LOT more if you want to see the water from your property.

As far as the weather goes, again it depends on where you live. If you live in the county (northern Maine), the winters are definitely cold and snowy. However, the hot muggy summer weather there is no fun either. Where I live on the ocean side of an island our winters are much milder and summers are bearable, although we did hit 80 three times this last summer. That said, you can always escape from the hot weather by taking the boat out onto the ocean where 65 is a hot day.

I came to Maine , from the deep south, because my family suddenly decided to move here without ever having been here. I hate it. If I didn't love my family more than I hate this state I'da gone back home years ago.

If you are considering moving here, think long and hard about it. That said, I will admit that I seem to be in the minority. Most transplants I've met love it here. Go figure.

we'll pretend and mostly try to be nice, but we do not like you, we don't want you moving here and changing our way of life and all the baggage you bring with you. You will never be accepted here! You will never be a Mainer, if your children are born here, they will not be Mainers, if your children's children are born here, well OK!
Please do us a favor and don't come here, if you are already here, GO AWAY!

I lived in Portland and outside Portland. Biked to and from town, walked all over to my groceries and farmers markets.

Obviously if you’re a person with bad health you shouldn’t be in a super rural area 🤣. Portland has plenty of doctors

The real problem with Maine is our power company, CMP or as we call them can't maintain power. We are right behind Florida for the duration of outages with MED. MED is if there is a big storm. However, can't maintain power is 4 times worse than Florida without MED. Next part is in Florida if your power goes out no big deal, you're still warm. In Maine your cold. Give you an idea we lost power 5 times for over 3 days. There were more days too where it was 1 or 2 days. You will never ever see a can't maintain power truck doing line maintenance unless its broke. The only reason we haven't had massive forest fires yet is it's generally pretty wet here.

Highly accurate. The "from away" mentality should also be mentioned on this list. North of Brunswick, the population dwindles, and the natives aren't particularly happy about people "from away" driving up the price of housing and making healthcare even less accessible. You can live in Vacationland 20 years, and if you're from away, you'll still be a tourist.

Mainer not by choice here - the hospital is for tourists. You break a leg? walk it off, the best you'll get is a tiny medical center or an hour or two drive to the nearest Maine Med, most likely in Portland.

Lifelong Mainer here.
I can see why nearly everything on this list is there and might be a reason not to move here, but to those of us who live here, it's just life in Maine.
That being said, please understand, the last influx of people from away, managed to hike up home and rental prices to levels unattainable to people who already live here. There is NO affordable housing for average Maine residents.
Most of us already have to commute long distances to work and forget about ocean or lake property. That's already been snatched up by rich people who spend a week or two during the summer, then leave.
One last thing, if youre coming here to enjoy the Summers, I hope you like Winter. You'll be completely frustrated by tourists wanting to appreciate Summer, too. Winter is the only time they let up long enough to let us enjoy our state.

Screw rural population voting, if Republicans wanna keep the ridiculous electoral college then democrats should get at least some benefits from it. The scale is already tipped in Republicans favor with electoral college vs popular vote.

I really can’t stress enough if you’re young and looking for excitement/nightlife it’s not the time to be in Maine. I’m in the back half of my 20’s and spend pretty much every weekend bouncing off the walls because nothing’s in walking distance, I refuse to drive drunk, and public transportation doesn’t operate anywhere close to me.

Housing has not been great in my lifetime, but since COVID with all of the New Yorkers and Massachusetts people moving here. It has gotten out of control. To put it into context I live in a house that just 4 years ago was only valued at $179,000. Now it is valued at $630,000.
