I totally agree with you on sewing tools, Good & bad! My go go juice would be coffee :)
ОтветитьGreat list! I would add a scissors sharpener to my list as a great tool - it doesn't get much attention in the sewing community, but I have found it so useful to have for when I am cutting out paper pattern pieces (with my paper-specific scissors of course). Sometimes I have to use it on my fabric scissors too. I use the Fiskars brand sharpener, works great so far.
ОтветитьI don’t have wonderclips! I must try them!
ОтветитьGreat list. I have a Daylight light, but not the slim line model. I may have to upgrade.
Have you tried a sewing gauge ruler? They are metal and have a little slider thing you can adjust. They are just a couple of dollars but work very well.
I recently got ballpoint pins for knit fabrics and they are a game changer! I find the Wonder clips a bit fiddly.
I’m really enjoying your channel - Vlogmas is great but I love it everyday - you have the cutest personality! I don’t like the turning tool either - surely there are better alternatives!
ОтветитьMedical exam paper and a new clear ruler are on my Christmas list. I also warped my current one and for whatever reason my local fabric store doesn’t carry that one anymore :/ Washaway wonder tape and steam a seam lite 2 (for knits) are among my favourite tools also:)
I’m interested in trying those wonder clips:):)
I purchased wonder clips for quilting, but still preferred pins, until I started using them for sewing knits. What a game changer! For me when I use the serger I use nothing but clips, when I use the sewing machine I only use pins.
ОтветитьReally enjoy your channel! Vlogmas is just fun. I too have the turning tool but I actually like it - especially when I sewed for my daughter years ago. It's probably like everything else - we need so many tools for specific reasons. I still use that tool for hair scrunched- gets that job done! Really like your title for your channel and so appreciate all your efforts!
ОтветитьI have the loop turner and I don’t get it at all! I’ve tried it many times and it just doesn’t make sense so I completely agree with you. And I love all those cute labels in your advent calendar!
ОтветитьI love my Gingher scissors: shears, embroidery, buttonhole, and applique’.
I have a Vogue Sewing reference book from the 1980’s that is also useful. The sleeve board, needle board, tailor’s ham, and sleeve roll come in handy (I have the clapper too).
I’ve never noticed an order from the cutting mat! Wow! But I thought yours looked better made too😊
Cheryl
Clover makes a hemming ruler that doesn’t melt.
ОтветитьMake yourself a hem guide using a file folder and measuring out the different hem allowances. You probably have one hanging around. The file folder takes steam well. I am using one I made about 7 years ago. No more ruler melt!
ОтветитьHate the loop turner. The clapper is my favorite of all time but probably more like the best sewing tool of 1825. 😆
ОтветитьIn regards to the melted ruler, check out a hot hemmer. They allow you to measure and iron hems in one, plus make curved or mitred corners.
ОтветитьA clapper is still on my list of tools to get!!!
Ответитьughhh...that loop turner! i have bought so many of those and then thrown them away because they suck. i bought the Dritz Quick Turn Fabric Tube Turners from joann semi-recently. it comes in a set of 3 and they actually work.
ОтветитьOne of my fav tools I bought this year is a button hole chisel. It makes cutting the button holes super easy! Worst tool I bought this year-a ruler gripper from Madam Sew. It came with no instructions and I can’t figure out how to attach it, try as I might. It makes me feel really stupid as heck. 🧐😫
ОтветитьLove this, I am nearly sure I seen Ruan theyorkshiresewgirl talking about metal sewing rulers 📏 🤔 not 100% sure it was definitely her but I think it was, check out her sewing gifts video ✌
ОтветитьI recently used a Straw & Kabob Stick (use the flat end of the kabob stick) to turn out the straps for my Ogden Cami. You can also use a chopstick, if it's narrower than the straw. I got the idea from a utube tutorial on making the Ogden Cami!
Hope this helps! :)
P.S.- love watching your videos & helpful tips.
The loop turner is a wonderful tool for pulling elastic thru the sides of face masks. I don't sew the elastic, I make a casing and tie the elastic after I pull it thru.
ОтветитьYou need a Clover Hot Ruler!
ОтветитьGet a metal drafting ruler. :) Hobby lobby has a great section in the art section for drafting tools. :)
ОтветитьLook up videos on spaghetti straps and they will show you how do use that loop Turner. I use it to bury my Serger tails
ОтветитьThe alternative to the wire loop turner (which can be a pain to use) is loop turning tubes, they come in different circumferences. They can be easier than a wire loop turner, but really skinny straps are a problem under all conditions.
Why not pick up some balsa wood next time you’re at Joanne’s or Michael’s and use that instead of plastic ruler?
I use wonder clips too, but always sew with my wrist pincushion on. It is my best sewing tool
