Chicago's historic Jens Jensen Columbus park trees felled for Mulch!

With a lifespan of 300 years, and four god sent insecticides available to the park district to preserve a few century old examples placed by Jensen, these historic Ash trees were allowed to succumb to at least five generations of the Emerald Ash Borer. Giving credit where do, the park district also start planting new eight year old or 2 1/2" DBH Hackberry, Sycamore, and Silver/Red Maple cultivars the same day. The historic park district was incorrectly informed that insecticide treatments would be needed for life of tree to protect them from Emerald Ash Borer so they did not preserve even one Jensen Ash tree. DOH! Ironically the city successfully saved 35,000 public trees from EAB while the Chicago park district lost 36,000. Jensen was quoted saying "My parks will not start to become what I envisioned until the trees have had at least 100 years of growth on them. Columbus parks trees are now 100 in 2013! The parks EAB infestation problems were aggravated by utilizing borer larvae tainted ash wood mulch over 1" in size for volcano mulching every park tree, and by the untimely removal of severely EAB damaged Ash trees which contain the highest Borer populations.
