Precast concrete vs In-situ concrete Who Wins?

It is always asked to compare precast concrete vs in-situ concrete, and will it be cheaper to construct out of precast concrete or in-situ concrete. But for a structural engineer, these types of questions are not that easy, as the real answer is it depends.

I go through some of the benefits of both in-situ Concrete and Precast Concrete, and what is the downside of using either. I will also provide guides on what type of structure are best suited for Precast Concrete and when should you choose an In-situ concrete solution.

- Long walls
- Columns
Precast Floors
- If Formwork is costly
- Area where you can not use formwork
- Floors with minimal variation

In-situ Concrete is best suited for
- Small building
- Areas that require high variability
- Transfer slabs
- Lots of steps and folds
- Areas with limited site access
