I’m assuming the first thing is to have money. Even if getting a loan, prices for land in many parts of Texas seem so high these days.

FYI - 1D1 Ag valuation in Texas varies widely per county for minimum acreage to qualify. For example, Edwards requires at least 50 acres. 49.99 acres is ineligible. Important to know as it will cost you up to 10xs more per year for taxes without a 1D1 valuation for taxes, whether wildlife, farming, timber, or grazing.

FYI#2 - 10 acre rule for hunting is what the state legislature has set as a "general guiding rule" but they have left it for every county or city to make their own rules regarding hunting. You will have to check each county and city for their specific rules as 10 acres is not the case unless they have specifically adopted the state general guidelines of 10 acres. Some counties it might be legal to shoot and hunt with rifle on a half acre but you are in violation of the law if your bullet travels across your property line. I don't recommend it as it is extremely dangerous to do so unless you are high in a tree shooting straight down. Some counties allow bow hunting but not rifle on smaller acreage. A good example of this is Harris county. Within the city limits of Houston, it is illegal to hunt period, with any weapon, on any size of property. But in Spring (Harris County also), there is no rule against archery tackle so hunting would technically be allowed on a quarter acre in a crowded neighborhood. I don't recommend it but it is legal as long as your arrow never crosses your property line. That is information per the Game warden responsible for Harris County. I have bow hunted on as little as 7 acres inside Harris County but outside the city limit of Houston.
