Hi all,
Here we see a different perspective to the Caleb's Rail Films experience, a pre-arranged cab ride on the beautifully preserved Streamliner Tram H1 Type No. 381, which was running during the St. Kilda Tramway Museum's 60th Anniversary Event held on the October Long Weekend last year (2017).
Thanks to fellow tramway enthusiast & volunteer Mr Andrew Gilbertson who allowed me in the cab during her inaugural day of running between the Museum & St. Kilda Beach in South Australia.
Historical Points about this Tram:
Car 381 was the first of 40 cars ordered to be built for the Municipal Tramways Trust (MTT) which ran the once extensive tramway network of Adelaide over 60 years ago.
This class of trams were planned as early as 1939. However, the first of these unique trams was not built until 13 years later when the tramway abandonment policy forced the cancellation of the remaining 39 cars to be built and all lines to close except one to Glenelg in 1957. All these lines would eventually be replaced by diesel-powered buses.
The structure of the tram car body was made of steel and was fitted with power operated doors. Four destination board blinds were fitted to each car, two at either end, a style that was later used on the replacement diesel-powered buses.
The interior was painted Asbury green and cream and fitted with fixed bus seats of the period. The Type/Classification of this tramcar was designated Type H1.
Car 381 entered service on the Henley North to Kensington Gardens line on Thursday 19th of February 1953. It was withdrawn four years & 10 months later in December of 1957.
Car 381 has had a more successful time in retirement than in regular service on the mainline. She was donated to the Museum and arrived on site on Friday 13th of August 1965. It became the sixth tram to enter service on the Museum's track in July 1974, four months after the official opening of the Museum's running track.
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy :)
