Update,,, these plants were unfortunately killed by the harsh winter of 2021 > 2022. Their 1st winter of 2020 > 2021 the survived no problem with minor protection and even flowered well in October 2021, however the winter of 2020 > 2021 was fairly mild only seeing a temperature low of about -1 F or -19 C. The winter of 2021 > 2022 I decided not to protect them and we saw a few lows of -11 F or -24C and the plants were unfortunately killed. During the same winter of 2021 > 2022 I also protected 1st year Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki' and they survived with very minor leaf damage. Considering O. heterophyllus 'Purpureus' is considered to be the most cold hardy of the O. heterophyllus cultivars I'm going to conclude that if I had protected them during the winter they were killed, they would have survived similarly to the 'Goshik'.
