very interesting. I'll have to start using both cams for tricky lighting shots. but a lot of the issues can be fixed in settings. samsung just needs to be more selective about what it sharpens, and what kind of scenes it brightens up.

Could you test the camera in 50MP? We all know that 12MP of stock cam is trash. I'm curious to see if Gcam can capture 50MP and how it compares to 50MP from stock. 50MP from the stock app is at a very different level

Hi Velian, try this:
- Download "Camera assistant" app
- Open "Camera assistant" app
- Set "Auto HDR" to "OFF"
- Set "Picture softening" set to "Medium"
- Go to the standard "Camera" app
- Set "Intelligence optimization" is set to "Maximum"
- Set "Scene optimizer" to "OFF"
Shoot something with the "Auto" mode, then edit:
- Light balance: -10
- Shadows: -10 (On daylight only)
- Tint: +5
- Temperature: -10

Those settings will bring the S24 Ultra camera up to a mirroless level camera look & performance.

Yes Samsung is lagging behind in terms of photographic rendering. A bright photo does not mean a beautiful photo... on the contrary... in 80% of cases these photos seem too flat without depth without this little 3D effect which brings out and magnifies what we have photographed. Their bright photo blurs the colors and minimizes the contrasts and personally I hate that. 95% of fans and I can understand them think and say that Samsung flagships are the best in terms of photography thanks to the media hype and the age of the brand... Samsung perhaps remains the best compromise between software and chipsets but certainly not in terms of camera hardware/optimization. I have the impression that this has been going on for several years since the rise of Chinese brands in terms of cameras in phones. 99% of the time I preferred the Gcam rendering in this comparison...an aberration. If everything is good then everything is good, why do you want that samsung changes anything. Only the consumer will judge over time...

Exactly the same story with S23 Ultra. GCam for the win. Not much changed with new generation and I also doubt they'll change much with upcoming S25 Ultra. Quite disappointing considering how Vivo X200 Pro is performing now.

I have researched the problem. It is poorly tuned jpeg imenetation on samsung's side.

Because people demand instant photos, something not really possible for obvious reasons, samsung wants to balance between speed and quality. It is higher quality vs higjer speed. You can have one, not both. Choose what you want because you cannot have both.

People need to learn to balance between iso and noise on one side and speed and motion blur on the other side. This meand the jpeg encoder has to work faster to satisfy user demand. This forces speed before quality of jpeg encoder. This is all obvious. If user prioritize quality, the encoder will use time to setup the details right. But this contradicts people's expectations.

What you see and perceive as noise, is actually comression artefacts showing as squares with different colors than expected. Squares, because jpeg works witb 8x8 blocks, and each block with different color is badly calculated compression in this 8x8 area of the image.

Gcam prioritizes different priority in compression.

This is why every photographer who respects himself and thr photography as art, never ever shoots in JPEG. They shoot in raw. Why for a reason.

The S23 Ultra and S24 Ultra offer 10 stops of dynamic range. Something old and clunky jpeg cannot afford to take and try to reduce the dynamic range to fit a containet 4 times smaller than the camera as hardware has to offer. One giveaway is the darker images of GCam, and Brighter images of Samsung app. This shows different priorities in Jpeg encoding.

I have out grown this problem. It is long since i have fully and completely disregarded jpeg and i no longer consider jpeg at all. I shoot in raw or on heic. I have instagram account, and twitter account, full of images to show for my words. So until you stay with limited formats as jpeg, you will always have limited results. You will always have to choose, what you want to gain and what to sacrifice in return.

I have grown and developed beyond the limitatations of jpeg.

With HEIC I get wider dynamic range, wider color space and better preservation of details. This eliminates compression artifacts, banding and blockinness as main issues discusses in the video. Simply put HEIC can afford and can take everything thenphone camera has to offer.

all this about Jpeg can you send me the samsung originals in a zip so facebook or twittewr don't damage them further.
I suspectthe issues are not noise but it iscompression artifacts. In anyway i don't deny the problem, i believe Samsung is messing up the jpeg processing and this messes up the image

Good video but truth is that this kind review kills product because everything you comparing here isn't present when 99% users use their products. Samsung algorithm is for look of the pictures not for you to zoom 1000 times. Who doses that after taking pictures. Straight look of the pictures everyone will choose Samsung. why every review talk bad about Samsung pictures? Please anyone here that take pictures and start zooming 100 time or more let me know. Please if you don't like factory algorithm leave them and choose another brand. This happened with screen , reviewers keep talking bad that Samsung screen is saturate colors and lot. On s24 ultra they dialed it down same reviewers complained the screen is not as vibrant as s23 ultra . This comparison is completely bias and just on your own interest

generally i would say g cam has better results objectively but its so clunky to use and lags alot. and sometimes the more vibrant images are pleasant. whats also interesting is that the stock files are like half the size of the g cam ones. I use gcam sometimes but most of the times i just dont have the time for it compared to taking a quick pick with double clicking on the on/off button.

Stock camera app images on my S23 Ultra are dog water.
The GCam i use is LMC 8.4 R17.
The only advantage that the stock camera app has is the fact that it can take 50 megapixel images.

Im really disappointed with the poor quality of images coming out of what is otherwise an excellent device. Feels like my mom's 250e motorola.

Velian, I have the chance to get a Pixel 9 Pro for half price plus some free earbuds but I've been a Samsung user for the last 3 years so I'm not sure if a switch to Pixels is something I can get used to, especially the UI and all the useful customization options.

I was going to wait for the S25U release and get the latest and greatest from Samsung but with these camera results, I'm really tempted to go for the Pixel right now. I really value having a great stock camera experience and I don't know if Samsung is capable of delivering that.

What would you advise? Thanks.

Very good comparison, thank you. It's really true, I can speak from experience with my s23 ultra and the g-cam that the difference is sometimes very big, it's all down to the software, I also don't understand why Samsung can't create something in between, like the g cam and the stock cam, because it's all about the process, the photos from the g cam look so much more natural and realistic. But the photos from the g cam are also taken at a higher resolution than those from the stock cam, twelve megapixels, but the resolution is higher than you know and the megabytes of the photos are also much larger, almost twice as much, which is why the image contains a lot more information

I feel that SAMSUNG has not been able to get away from the bright, vivid, HDR-enhanced photoshoots that were popular around 2018,19.

They have completely missed the recent trend of photorealistic but still taking advantage of the smartphone's image processing strengths, such as the manufacturers who collaborated with Leica, Zeiss, and others.

The oversharpening is a chronic disease and should be reworked from scratch like the animations in OneUI7.

Samsung's stock camera has always been like that but no one notices it because the Google camera isn't advertised with it. The Google camera app takes better pictures but the Samsung stock camera app has better settings which is catered to samsung's UI/Operating system.. I always ditched the Google camera app because the difference in quality isn't that much of a deal breaker but like he says, you do notice it.

GCam is miles ahead. Samsung's photos are so oversharpened that you can't see half of the leaves in the trees. GCam looks so much more natural, like a real camera was used. I can't stand the the cartoonish look cause by overprocessing, over contrast and gamma, overexposure ect. Why the hell Samsung does all this to worsen the camera??

Even without zooming, stock camera pictures look less pleasant/more artificial. With competition that's light years ahead, the same problems year after year on Samsung phones and camera itself being one of the most important things for users/when deciding which phone to get - I don't know for how long Samsung can continue like this.
