For over 10 days in November of 2024, Glenbrook Vintage Railway has been keeping busy with their 'East & West rail tour' traversing the lower and central North Island, trekking the main trunk, Taranaki and Napier routes. On the 14th of November, the train was running a return trip back home, hauled by the two lot, DC 4818 leading and DBR 1254 trailing. Train A060 made a short stop at Hamilton for pax off before heading to Papakura where the consist was later on run around for the DBR to lead the final leg to Glenbrook.
Covering up the brief overview of DC 4818 (GMD G22AR), this locomotive was purchased by Glenbrook Vintage Railway in 2019 and was moved to their facilities for restoration and long-term overhaul to eventually become a part of GVR's heritage fleet. After undergoing the long process of restoration, DC 4818 finally got mainline certified in October 2024, facing its bright future of hauling excursions and charters on the New Zealand national rail network. The 'East & West rail tour marked the locomotive's first ever mainline excursion, pairing up with DBR 1254. Huge praise for the team for achieving such milestone!
Please excuse the blur 47 seconds into the video, there was a local who walked in front of my shot without noticing I was filming the train emerging from around the corner. Incidentally, I had originally planned to see GVR's train in Waiouru and Hapuawhenua viaduct, but it turned out to be unsuccessful. It was difficult to keep up with because of road detours that resulted from closures and disruptions, same with Hikoi Te Tiriti movements as well. That way I had to cut my video short.
Enjoy!
