Spend a day in your local police department, talk to the men and women who get up everyday, kiss their loved ones good bye not knowing if they'll make it back later that day. Go through a community course if your police department offers it. Run through the simulations they go through to make split-second decisions to de-escalate situations.
Learn how they're trained to stop a threat, not wound a threat but stop a threat because criminals with adrenaline/drugs in their systems may not stop at one bullet. Ask them about chain of command and what happens if they don't obey a senior officer. Ask them about internal politics of being a cop and how disobeying your senior officers can stop advancement in it's tracks. Good cops hate bad cops and typically they internally weed those people out of the force.
