Actually he and his fiancée survived the crash. The pilots climbed out of the broken windshield and escaped the fire. What they didn't do was unlock the cabin door and check on the other passengers. Rick and Helen were found at the cockpit door huddled together.

My friend boyfriend was in Rick band and was on that plane. When she told me what happened that night I bawled my eyes out. She cries every time she tells that story.

Really great video. I love Ricky Nelson’s music. I do wish that we could have found out whatever became of the pilots who survived the crash. I would be very interested in what those final moments were like as I assume that they had limited ability to control the plane when it was on fire. I am curious about what that day was like leading up to the crash and how it affected their lives going forward.

Man i work with seen the Plane crash in his field he said it was a horrible sight

It oddly looks like the peaceful Clear Lake, Iowa farmland where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Big Bobber crashed.

#1 Ricky Nelsons plane didn't crash! It blew up in mid- air ! I started in Radio 2 years before he died!

Ricky Nelson was the most mannerly man I have ever met. A older friend dragged me to a concert and it was a lot of middle aged moms and me. I was nineteen or twenty. I took him out for some grade A Oklahoma steak. We just talked and I got a kiss. Nothing too crazy just a sweet date sort of. Ricky was a real sweetheart! Ozzie raised him right.

Why do all these singers die in plane crashes?

Ricky’s daughter Tracy is one of my favorite actresses ever.

Harriet Nelson lived in my hometown of Laguna Beach, CA. My mom did estate sales and owned an antique shop in town and I went with her to Harriet's home around 1983 to look at some items Harriet wished to sell. After awhile Harriet asked me if I would like a drink of water and she handed the glass to me in her kitchen. She told my mom during that visit that I was a handsome young man. That made my year as a 17 year old kid and growing up watching their show :)

You'd think a lesson was learned from the Skynyrd crash eight years earlier not to travel in an antiquated plane from the forties.

The only bit I know of Ricky Nelson. Is from Queen. Freddie loved Ricky Nelson. He does two of Ricky songs in my fav of the last Queen concerts. Rock Stars gone to soon. In plane crashes is a crazy sad list! I actually had to go look it’s 12 they don’t have John Denver listed.😱😰RIP Ricky Nelson. He was Legend!🎸😰

I was a truck driver at that time, and thought I could celebrate New Year's Eve with friends in Dallas, but got a last minute dispatch to Little Rock that afternoon. I was there soon after the plane went down and will always remember the endless emergency vehicles screaming down the road. I had no idea of what had happened until it was announced on the radio.

Scott, I loved Ricky Nelson but, didn't have any records of his. Loved his song "Hello Mary Lou" I was 19 yrs old when I seen the crash on tv. And loved watching them on the satellite dish my Daddy bought from his brother Albert before they moved back to Visalia CA. Really enjoyed your video.

Giving my age away but I remember watching Ozzie and Harrit Show with Ricky and David. He was a good singer but felt Elvis definitely was the better. Both had sad endings. RIP to all the Nelsons and Presleys.
