Back in the early 80's, I got to know one of the cover bands in my hometown. They said that the best drum sounds came from using only batter heads with a product called a dead-ringer which was a ring of foam that was maybe 1.5x1.5 inches and a bit smaller than the head. It had adhesive on one side and would be stuck directly on the head - basically like an exagerated EMAD on all the toms.
