My name is Nicholas Demski and my poetry has been published in The Broad River Review (Gardner-Webb University), Whiskey Island (Cleveland State University), and Artifact Nouveau (San Joaquin Delta College).
I received Runner-Up in Central Michigan University's Poetry Jett Competition as an undergraduate.
I'm most inspired by contemporary poets like Billy Collins and Tony Hoagland as well as past poets such as Frost and Dickinson.
However, I grew up hearing the same phrases about poetry that we all hear, such as, "there's no money in poetry." Yet, here we are witnessing an explosion of spoken word poets publishing their work and making a living with their slam poetry, poetry videos, and in-person spoken word events.
While I've been a poet my whole life (and I knew it from as young as I have memories), my social conditioning always pushed me away from it. I graduated college to go into teaching English abroad in Hong Kong and Colombia, then I ran a summer camp in Vietnam. Now, I'm 34-years-old, have a 7-year-old daughter of my own as a full-time single parent, and I want to show her that following your passion is completely viable. She may not be a poet when she grows up, but I believe that if I continue following this path of publishing my spoken word slam poetry, good things will happen and I can find a way to make this into a living. If I can do that, hopefully my daughter won't spend the first third of her life (like I did) hiding her art because she thinks it won't make money. I wasted over 30 years chasing money like I was taught, instead of performing my spoken word poems, and it made me miserable.
Now, even though this channel is small (74 subs as of writing this), I feel 1000% better about what I'm doing.
Maybe I'll never make a dollar publishing poetry? That will be okay. Because I've made plenty of money in 'normal jobs' and found that having the money does little for life's enjoyment. I'm just stoked to bring you my poems as often as I can because it's the only thing that brings me internal peace. I guess I'd rather have a go at full-time, professional poetry and starve then make a steady paycheck and destroy my mental and physical health in a job that I despise.
