So let me get this straight: Firearms aficionados and the firearms industry have spent countless hours producing untold numbers of videos and published articles extolling the fact that there was a loophole in the NFA that they were taking advantage of to effectively circumvent the requirement to register a firearm that in their own words is effectively and demonstrably no different from an SBR. And now "gun nuts" (and I do make the distinction) are up arms screaming, "overreach! - 2nd amendment! - personal freedoms! - etc." when the ATF agrees with all this evidence, and closes this loophole with a rule change (as they are required to BY LAW!) on January 13, 2023.

Let me summarize this with an analogy: A law is passed requiring all duck owners to pay a fee and register their ducks. Let's call this the Duck Registration Act. Stupid law, but the law is the law. Now a group of duck owners with no legal background decide to scour the internet for alternatives to this ridiculous law and decide to modify their ducks by painting their feet blue. Unsurprisingly, the authorities get wind of this and they are arrested (principally because these entrepreneurs posted videos (LIKE THIS ONE!) and published articles letting everyone know what they were doing and why). Now in court, these nefarious, potential felons have to prove to a jury of their peers (not all of whom are duck aficionados) that according to their dictionary a duck is a bird that quacks, has a bill, feathers, waddles, and has orange feet and since their birds obviously have blue feet, they cannot be considered ducks. Needless to say, I don't see the verdict swinging in their favor.

As to this bullshit about the ATF not having the resources to implement this rule change: Fines from a handful of prosecutions would provide ATF very quickly with enough money to hire several new employees. A minimum estimate of a thousand successful prosecutions would alone put up to 10 million dollars into the ATF coffers. These new employees do not even have to be trained, armed agents - only paper pushers sitting at a computer reviewing existing gun manufacturing and sales records. Multiply this by the reported number of braced pistols in circulation and you're looking at a potentially very lucrative undertaking. And let's say that a lot of holdouts to the free 120 day registration amnesty decide to comply after the fact and pay the $200 registration fee. Take those numbers and multiply that by a fraction of the estimated number of currently circulating braced pistols and you're looking at some BIG money. If they're smart, the ATF could avoid the problem all together and elect to outsource this work to a private consulting firm. (remember, you heard it here first!)

At this point here are the options: 1. Get Congress to revisit and change the NFA (could take years!). 2. Modify, destroy or surrender your firearm as outlined by the ATF. 3. Register your braced pistol within the 120 day grace period without paying a fee (effectively burying the ATF in paperwork without funding their operation). 4. Register your braced pistol after the 120 day grace period (and thus bankrolling the ATF). 5. Refuse to register your firearms (and if found out and convicted face prison and substantial fines, and as a convicted felon, lose your right to own any firearms). Pick one.
