The letters are said to be later 18th and 19th century propagandistic and deliberately crude retellings of an original correspondence between cossacks and the ottoman Sultan. Some Historians say even the original letters are a forgery and just anti-ottoman propaganda. But then some say they're authentic.

The Cossack response to the The Sultan is believed to be a Polish literary forgery of the real letter released as anti Ottoman propaganda. There are actual letters between The Sultan and The Cossacks. Peter and Matt are great as always 👋

This is my favorite letter ever written. I have a friend from that region in Ukraine and I assure you they’ve changed very little. SLAVA UKRAINI!

The ‘letter’ began as a joke circulating as a pamphlet among polish nobles in the late 1600s and gradually, through a long period of chinese whispers and cross-translations around eastern europe, it transformed into what it is today, although its ‘final’ form was set in the late 1800s.

It may not be a real letter, but it's still a great piece of writing. There is a famous painting by Ilya Repin depicting the event called "Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks". Worth a Googling. It's what I see in my mind's eye when hearing it.

There is a series called Ladies of Letters where 2 LEGENDS of stage and screen Anne Reid and Maureen Lipman exchange a series of ever more bizare passive agressive letters until they both end up in prison together. Well worth a watch.

British comedian Joe Lycett is famous for writing hilarious complaint letters to big corporations. You should check out some video of him reading them (and the replies he receives) out. BTW, when talking about historic fighting word message exchanges my favourite is when Philip of Macedonia sent a message to the Spartans saying “If I invade, you will be destroyed.” The Spartans simply replied "Yeah, if.”
