If you want to skip to the funny part, skip to two paragraphs below. The following paragraph is just for those who weren't in the USAF or didn't ever eat on a USAF base so they'll understand the funny situation.

When I was in the USAF in the mid-80s, I was stationed at Charleston AFB, South Carolina. It was and still is one of the mega MAC (Military Airlift Command ... think military version of FedEx) bases on the 48. All branches were transported on USAF flights. Being that, it was a 24/7 base and thus our dining hall was likewise; all-ranks due to passengers flights coming in any time of the day and night; and located right next to the flight line so we could quickly run passengers to and from it. And we served all meals at all times of the day because of the different time zones passengers were coming from. For me, it might be breakfast time but for a flight, it might be supper time. So the mess hall offered all the common breakfast foods (freshly-made from-scratch pancakes, waffles, muffins, grits [this was the South after all], biscuits and gravy [again, South], etc.) to lunch food (we had a great make-your-own cold sandwich bar ... though they had pre-made ones for those in a rush) to supper fare (usually four different hot meats [always a beef, pork, chicken, and usually lamb ... though this might be turkey or, we joked, whatever a plane hit on the airstrip yesterday] with carvers giving you slices; always lasagna; a wok station [Asian food]; taco station; and, of course, hamburgers, hotdogs, brats, etc.). And, I guess, the Air Force has a different stance when it comes to ranks. There is no segregation where officers only sat with officers, sergeants only sat with sergeants, and enlisted only sat with enlisted. Just the opposite. The sergeants and officers always asked if they could sit with us airmen ... as if we would EVER say "Oh hell no!" ... and then just do essentially employee morale work. "How are things going, boys?" "Any complaints?" "Doing anything fun this weekend?" If you were new to the base, the base commander (a three-star) always made it a point to sit with you for lunch as soon as he could. Being the mess hall and USAF, it was a no-salute zone so he put down his tray across from you, reach across, and shook your hand. He'd ask you questions about your family, how tech school was, etc. and then the next time he saw you on base and every single time then after, he would ask you a question that showed he remembered what you told him. Charleston AFB was NOT a small base. He knew us all. Anyway...

It is lunch time and I, an Airman, is waiting behind two black female Army captains at the salad bar. I wanted real bacon bits for my baked potato. In front of the Army captains and I were two white female USAF captains. One was about to snag some strawberries when the one in front of her said, "Sue, don't. They were picked three days. Look at the marker." Markers were tiny signs by each item that listed what they were, when they were picked, usually where they were picked, and when they arrived. Sue was appalled and replaced the tongs back to where they were. That was it for one of the female Army captains who loudly in a overly fake Southern bell accent said, "Oh, dear Lordy Lord, three days old?! Three days old?! Heaven forbid! Those will never touch these lips!" The other female officer laughed and the jokester turned to the USAF officers who were a bit annoyed at her. Army officer: "Honey, our strawberries come in a can!" and then happily loaded up her plate with "old" strawberries while smiling a big smile at the USAF captains. Everyone in the mess hall laughed, including the two USAF captains.

If you want to be Rambo or He-Man, do NOT join the US Air Force or US Space Force. Air Force and Space Force are the most technical of the military branches. Brain is FAR more valued than brawn. After basic training, I never did PT again. Not once. Well, they did organize 5K and 10K runs around the base but they weren't mandatory. The prizes were really good but not mandatory. You just had not to become fat. Not sure what happened to you if you became fat. We had a firing range but you were never required to use it. I did as they gave you all the free ammo you could fire and essentially free firing instruction. That and you could pick and choose any gun from their armory to fire. They just wanted you to use their range and I was commonly the only non-Security airman on the range. One time the Security Division commander came, called everyone to him for clearly a chat about Security (which I was sure I didn't have security clearance to hear), and became annoyed when I didn't hop over. He yelled for me to get my butt over to him. The firing instructor yelled right after the commander, "Nevermind!" The commander looked upset at the instructor who then told him I wasn't Security and the commander yelled back, "Sorry, I thought you were one of my men! Carry on!" He later came and apologized again and then asked if I would be interested in switching to Security. 😂 Even though supposedly they're not supposed to do it, ALL division commanders try to poach airmen from other divisions. 🤣

Army and Marines are the real branches the other two are just transportation. Also if you're in a combat unit and are deployed you rotate. If you're Army you rotate with Marines and vice versa. They both have designated areas but they will overlap areas for coverage. Army has long deployments while the Marines are shorter. Its common for Marines to provide overwatch and Army to provide overwatch as well. The two branches do not hate other they work together. They will crap about rach other but its all in fun because the end of the day they are the best fighting force when you combine the two.

❤ I got out of the Army in 2017 for the Air Force National guard, thinking the Air Force would be what everyone says it is. I then took a federal GS position on an AD AF base. After 8 years of working with the AF, I see the truth: The AF is not professional and the people are self serving first. It has weak leadership. The NCOs are just older guys, they are not role models, they don’t lead from the front. There are no SOPs so everyone just BS’s and writes themselves good performance reviews. The Air Force brags the most but they don’t back it up. If you just want the benefits and an easy time go AF. If you want brotherhood and pride, choose anything else.

🫡🇦🇨🇧🇲🫡 royal Australian air force and navy Cadet here , my little brother joined the army and has graduated from cadet school he'll have to do another 4 years before being considered for deployment my main goal in life is to protect my family as the oldest male sibling in the family therefore when I found out he had similar interests in the defence force that I had I immediately knew I had to sign up because I'm not letting my brother be deployed one day and not come back home I will personally make sure I'm there to provide defences for him so him and his men can come home and hug our family members
