Simon, you need a steel fabrication shop. They can drill, and fit matching screw.

Most are desperate for work.

It’s a good idea, but be carful on patent for speed sticks

You could maybe talk to a local machine/metal fab shop. They would most likely have tiny drop/ excess metal laying around that is practically trash to them. They could maybe even bore and tap to fit the demo shaft adapters.

I made a set of those last summer. Just buy some heavy washers and a bolt that fits inside the shaft. Use some epoxy to hold it all together. You can buy really cheap graphite shafts in a lot places. Here are the weights.

Green light club 255 grams
Blue medium club 290 grams
Red heavy club 335 grams

Brilliant idea, actually you could be a specific design for any adaptor in the market is not too hard... I'll mail you with some ideas I got days before.. maybe there is something interesting.

I had a look at a Driver shaft I have laying around (Taylormade tip): Couldn't we just stack a whole bunch of washers and then bolt it to the shaft? The thread is M4.

A few years ago I worked with a pro that was involved with sourcing SS component parts from China to be assembled into a set of speed sticks. He said that in bulk amounts, each of the 3 components (Grip, shaft and weight) cost between $0.50 and $1.

The cost of the system is mainly due to the cost of R&D for the protocol, marketing and distribution.
Ive been considering doing the same thing with some of the old clubs I have lying around but like you the issue is finding suitable weights (approx 160g, 185g and 210g) to attach to the shaft in some sort of balanced, symmetrical & permanent fashion. Personally unless Im in a proper hitting bay I wouldn't swing a home made version fast - mainly because of the possibility of ballistic projectile disaster

I reckon as long as you don't copy the method they use (i.e. 3 weights and the instructions) you have nothing to fear from the patent infringement side. However, to sell it as sports equipment I would definitely recommend testing and that's where we may run into trouble. Realistically the shafts should be perfectly fine to swing a heavier weight than a club head and you can probably test the force required to break one, BUT since the shafts are all different, testing one does not qualify as product testing. I.e. if one shaft is sub par and breaks, however unlikely that might be, where does that leave you? Rather than buying lots of 7i shafts and finding a way of producing the weights, why not just concentrate on the weights? A lot of people, especially the ones taking golf seriously enough to use a speed stick, will have adjustable drivers, and the shaft can be removed from the head. Not sure exactly how much difference there is in the tips but if you can find a way to produce a weight that is compatible with most drivers, you can sell a DIY kit with just a weight and instructions on how to use them as a speed trainer. The shaft is no longer your responsibility and the liability for attaching the weight to the shaft and the shaft itself is now on the individual.

I had thought of something similar but without the shaft....My idea was to make a weight with a screw going through it that is the same as they use on drivers, so you could potentially use your own driver shaft with the weight

Get you some lengths of 3/4 or 1 inch rebar, cut them to weight (shouldn’t be hard to figure out), have a machine shop drill a .355 or .370 or whatever diameter the tip is and epoxy those babies on. If epoxy will hold a clubhead hitting a ball on, why over complicate things? Your swinging it with no impact. Rebar is cheap, one length probably give you 40+ weights, a decent machine shop could knock out a hundred easy in a morning

What about 1 weight but you adjust its position up/down the shaft?
You could incorporate a pressure sensor to display max speed and or beep to indicate the point in the swing you first hit the desired swing speed. 🤔

Hi Simon,
Great idea, I would talk to someone local who is able to operate a CNC lathe. Your weights shoulden't come in single pieces, there are long bars sold for cheap. find the right diameter for the weight you are looking for let someone cut them to length and with a once programmed Program you let the metal lathe turn it to size and put the right thread in the End. Just go ask someone who operated a lathe before and tell them what you want to have. They will know how easy it can be. Excuse my English, not native :)

Don't bother. It's not worth the hassle with getting them fabricated, health and safety, solicitors etc... I would probably try 3-4 different ideas with the first batch of shafts and see what sticks.

- Sell a set - maybe with an iron head - as try-before-you-buy grip package (Tour velvet, MCC etc...)
- Re-grio with a Golf Pride Leadbetter trading grip and sell as a grip trainer
- Very unique looking alignment sticks :) Maybe with a cool stick cover.

Simon as an Engineer I would find a local subcontract machining company sketch a drawing of what you want and they will manufacture you these out of say St Steel, you may have to experiment to get the weight right. Its a turned blank with a blind tapped hole. You could assemble these by adding some loctite thread adhesive and tighten using a wrench. Easy job for you !

Good idea. I did something similar (and actually quite a bit more DIY-style) as I got an demo lady 3 wood shaft, and I attached a few old batteries to the tip, glued and then multiple layers of duct tape. Works great (even if I should have put one more battery as it's a tad too light even for "speed-stick" duties).

Hi Simon
Enjoying your vid’s immensely and learning a lot. Like many I’m trying to find golf related things to do as well as home and garden maintenance. So with that in mind, after watching plenty of WIMB’s and listening to your suggestions for others, I decided to create another bag! I currently play Cobra Max Techflo 5-SW with Hybrid 4 Iron recommended by local Pro. I then bought myself Cobra F6 Driver & 3 Wood after trying somebody else’s to complete the bag.
A lot of people talk about how good the feel with Mizuno are, so I bought 4-9 JPX-850 just to try out. I then bought 3 Vokey SM5 52/56/60 wedges, as a lot of people think highly of these. Now, I already have a TaylorMade OS Daytona putter which works well for me. What would you recommend for Driver, 3 Wood & 4 Iron Hybrid to complete this bag?

Have a look at making weights the same what that sea anglers make theirs. The moulds are re usable & would give consistent weights. The quality of screw needs to be good, I have the swing speed stick & taking weights on & off is wearing the head of the screw. Maybe a wing nut would work instead?
Good luck.

Hi Simon, probably didn't give you enough info on previous comment. 20 hadicap but coming down, can score 25pts on 9, but too many penalty strokes, can score 7-8 on par 5 with 3 off tee. Senior golfer 65, back to golf last 4 years. Had lessons but went backwards! Changed philosophy, direction & have been working on swing and speed this year in garden. Went to see how well on course and that day, they closed all courses. No idea of swing speeds or how far I hit clubs now. All the best John

Hi Simon. I made my own. 3 snapped stiff graphite driver shafts retrieved from bins on the golf course. Then, following the weighting % superspeed use, an appropriate amount of roof flashing lead in about a 40mm width. Roll it round the end of each shaft (like a Swiss roll) untill just under appropriate weight. Drill 2 holes through lead and shaft about 15 mm appart. Pop through cotter pins and fold the ends around.(could use panel pins as substitute). Voilà. Been using them for about 8 months. Good results and lead still rock solid in place.

The company that owns this screw system are very proprietary and would run you down if you tried to use their fitting system tips for something else and profit from it. There is another company that makes these tips but they have legal issues also because of the original design and all. Golf companies have to pay them tons to have these easy interchangeable tips for fitting purposes. With that said. I think just using the shafts without the tip is still possible. I machine and build all types of things and I don’t see it being to hard to design a way to keep the shafts and weights together safely and staying out of a law suit from this tip manufacturer

Late to game but find a high school or a trade school with a metal shop . Speak to teacher in charge and give him about 6. Shafts and weights to figure out how to secure weight to shaft. They likely have a metal drill and the weight can be held with a vice.
