we're not really talking about oil here, increasingly we are talking about a product known as bitumen from the Alberta tar or oil sands ... think about it for a moment, think about taking as little as a pick-up load of this stuff and running it through the backyard burning barrel / sure, I eventually have a product (it's not oil but it can be refined into oil), but what do you suppose my neighbours would be thinking ??
I get it that commerce is important (I do), but there comes a time when other factors ought to be considered. leave the stuff exactly where it lies at least until technology catches up, and if it means a slightly less well of us, then at least we move into tomorrow with character intact.
I guess you could say we are at a crossroads here with some advising 'full steam ahead' while others (a wimpy lot) advising caution; I'm for wimpy because down the road this leaves us with a few more friends, and someday we're gonna need them.

Commenting on some of the information in the comments...Not well known is the fact that in the US and I recon here as well we have unused wells drilled and capped all up and down the plains and foothills of the mountains of North America. These are known as Strategic Wartime Reserves so that , caught up in a war we would have steady oil in our own country. The number of wells and the quantity of oil is immense. There is far more reserves than is necessary considering how they envisioned wars when they started doing this and continued till today. How to juggle money so it winds up in your pocket seems to be what drives them

I am not against fossil fuel. I am not against pipelines. I am against a foreign country using eminent domain to transport oil through another country and then back to the country witch it was originally from. Why not build a refinery in Saskatchewan and one in north Dakota.

yes yes -- michigan gets all the risk of a devasting great lakes oil spill, enbridge gets is daily $2 million a day for pumping alberta oil products and sarnia canada get 95% of the oil being pumped. but why should michigan serve as a permanent high risk shortcut to get alberta oil to sarnia? why is this michigan's problem. oil pipelines in great lakes basin are the epitome of stupidity and greed start working on a cute jingle for the next anchor drag at the straits and a possible worst case spill of 2.5 million gallons of alberta oil (mich tech study of 2018) then there the enbridge expert neil earnest who told us a line 5 shutdown would bump gas prices at the pump by half a cent a gallon.
