I had a 79 f150 with a 300 6 cylinder with a 3 on the tree 2 wheel drive. Eventually took out 6 and put a 302 in it with a floor shifter. I also had a 73 f100 ranger xlt it had a blown up 360 when i got it i had a 390 i put in it.
ОтветитьA co-worker had a 79 F-250 4x4 with the 300 six 4 spd stick I would love to find one now. I had a 78 F-250 2wd 300 4 spd it was a great truck but got stuck easily.
ОтветитьI enjoy your videos, I have a 79 f100 ,had a 302 ,3 speed, I put a 351w in and a granny low 4 speed. It's just an old farm truck, nothing to look at ,very dependable though.
ОтветитьI had a 1980 f250 with factory cruise control and 8 track player with a 351m. I miss that truck. Weird 16.5 rims regular cab rear sliding window no ac, triangle wi dows 3 speed automatic. I miss that truck.
ОтветитьMy uncle had one with the 460. My 5’ tall, 90 lbs. cousin had to drive it one day and stopped on a newly painted railroad crossing. When she tried to go the truck wouldn’t move, and she looked out the back and saw she’d been burning rubber and there was smoke everywhere!
ОтветитьThat last part showing the Supercab with the pedal to the floor was very impressive. The 460 is still an impressive power plant. A 240/300 upgraded with an aftermarket intake, headers, and anything else always gets my attention.
ОтветитьAll good
ОтветитьYou should make a video about the ford three hundred sixty v eight
ОтветитьMy dream trk. 1979. F250 supercab. XLT lariet. Bigfoot blue.
ОтветитьMy dad had a 1978 F-150 Supercab short wide bed with a 460. That thing ran like a scalded ass ape. The only thing it didn't pass was a gas station.
ОтветитьMy '78 f150 with 351m and automatic got 14 mpg in 1980. It was a slug with the stock cam, timing set, and exhaust but got decent mileage.
Ответитьthey're used inWell Drillingwhat other engine can you floor for 12 hours a day and it doesn't blow
ОтветитьYou actually missed 3 engines that you could get in the 1970’s Ford Trucks, only one of those you could not get in a dent side but could get in the flare side trucks. Those being 240 inline six, the 360 and 390 engines, the 240 to my knowledge was not installed in a dent side from the factor. The 302 was not used in the 4x4 trucks due to insufficient power and torque output, and was technically underpowered even for a Ford F-100/F-150 but was used for fuel economy and emissions standards. And if you found a 460 in a 4x4, it was because someone stuck in there to get better gas mileage, which the 351M/400, and 390 was known to get horrible gas mileage. And you can put 302 heads on a 351W block, and bolt a 351W intake to the 302 heads and it will leak water if you use 351 intake gaskets. To make it work you have to bore the head bolt holes out on a 302, in order to accommodate the 351W head bolts and use the 302 intake gaskets for the heads to prevent leakage and the 351W valley gaskets. It will still leak water even with the 351W combo gasket set, so you do have to buy a set of 302 intake gaskets, and 351W intake gaskets to get it to seal up properly. Ask me how I know!!!!!
ОтветитьI always enjoy your videos on your 79 Ford Trucks. I had a 79 Ranchero with the 351M. It however was worn out and had an issue with the thermostat and ended up getting to hot and blew out a few freeze plugs. It was still a good motor to have. I like my Fords, what can I say. =)
Ответитьone more thing. I had a 71 F250 someone dropped a 460 in it. It was fun, but that fuel mileage was terrible. It defiantly needed the dual tanks that came with the F-250. lol!
ОтветитьMy first vehicle ever is a 1978 Ford Bronco with 351M. At 290,000 miles it was losing compression in the back 2 cylinders from the carb flooding on hot starts. Swapped in a 460 with ~100k miles on it. Truck is now at 420,000 miles and the 460 is starting to have the same issue. Fuel injection is definitely better than carb for these engines. Also had a 1968 Lincoln and 1977 F250 crew cab with 460. I somewhat regret selling the F250 , sold it to an enthousiast so hopefully it's in good hands.
Ответитьmy father put a 460 in 79 4x4 bronco true track in front lockers in rear trackion bars 4in lift on 35 tires 4.10gears i wise l had it today
ОтветитьI had a 76 F250 Camper Special with the 460. Also had experience with several Lincoln automobiles with the 460. What a great engine! Also drove a 1966 F100 with the straight six. Drove to work for a fireman for 14 years, then I drove it 5 years on a night shift, from 100F in the summer to minus 5 on a cold winter night when I got out of work, it would always start up and take me home.
ОтветитьDad still has his '71 F100 that he's had since 1985.
Had the trans he put in 20 years ago rebuilt last year, and the stock 351 Windsor rebuilt in 1996, which he had bored out to a 360.
Turned that motor into a solid powerhouse, but 12 miles to the gallon on a good day 😅
Because of that and growing up with that truck, the 351 Windsor has a special place in my life.
Best ever made ford trucks
Ответить351 w good one 300 best ever
ОтветитьWhat you didn't mention in addition to only being available in 2wd was the 302 and 460 could only be had with automatics
ОтветитьFe390 was my favorite. It put up with tons more abuse than that damn 400 modified did.
ОтветитьCool history on the motors available back then. I started to drive with a 65 ford f100. It had a 240 in it that I swapped out for a 300. I also put a offenhouser duel plain intake and a header with an RV cam. You couldn’t stop that thing. I passed that down to my nephew and got a 79 ford bronco with a 400. Loved the bronco, but hated the motor. That was my last ford, now I drive an 06 GMC 2500 hd with an 8.1 liter. Absolutely love it.

ОтветитьGreat job !!
ОтветитьMy f150 360FE is in the shop with a flat cam line leading to dead cylinder #7… question is rebuild stock, stroker, or replace? I want better street drivability/ power and hopefully decent mileage… but any mpg 10+ ill be fairly happy with
ОтветитьI don't know if you're still reading these but i have an F-250 Supercab 4x4 4 speed manual. The vavle cover has a sticker that says 351M/400. How do I tell which one I have?
Ответить351M/400 gets a bad rap on MPG, but they’re often paired with super low gears (3.73 is the lowest I’ve seen with them). First Dentside I ever built (77 F100 SWB) I put a 351M with a C6 from a 460 police interceptor and backed it up with a 9-inch with a 3.25 Posi-Trac and it could get 20mpg easy, not to mention hit 135mph (verified by Highway Patrol) at a very low 2100rpm. The mileage dropped to around 15 after the FoMoCo carb decided to blow out the throttle shaft and it got a Holley 2100 600cfm carb that I jetted down to .037 I believe was the best, with a smooth ported low-plane off a 400 from a Mercury.
ОтветитьMy 79 clubcab had a 460 and was a mover.
The 302 was my favorite.
The 300 was in my 65.
Really liked that tough rig.
My 66 f250 had the 351 industrial.
Then my 78 half ton had the 460.Great truck !
If that 460 had wings it would fly !
ОтветитьCool super cab with the 460, i got 77 250 camper special supercab ,same pant an chrome, also have 78 4x4 brushgard, rollbar shortbed 400cid,bought new when i was 15.also have 79 shortbed 4x4 transplant 460,rolls on 35,s 6in.lift. ford had best truck on the road back then.
ОтветитьNot exactly bone stock, but interesting comparison.
Ответить360
ОтветитьPower is fun and all, but the 300 IS THE BEST ENGINE FORD EVER MADE.
ОтветитьI have a super cab a bronco and 2wd F-250 are all 460 powered have a bronco with 351 m and a F-150 with 400 they are both sticks
ОтветитьLol unbreakable my ass 1000 bucks says you're dead wrong on that one ! Unbreakable
ОтветитьI had a '72 Ford Galaxie that had the "S" code 400 engine in it, and it would get 21 to 22 mpg, on trips.
It would get around 15 to 18 mpg just cruising around.
It was a very torquey engine.
The S code engine was a high performance engine.
That big ole Galaxie would get rubber from a standing start, if you nailed it!!!.
😎😎😎😎
My favorite engine from back then would have to be the ole tried & true Ford 302, for daily driving use.
For plan ole brunt and grunt, the Ford 460 would be my choice for that.
I had a 1976 f250 Rangerxlt same colour combo as the brown and white one mine wasn't the club cab mine had a 390 V8 in it loved the truck at 16 brand new I paid 4k out the door you don't see deals like that anymore 😊
ОтветитьThe 351M in the 400 ate main bearings
ОтветитьNo the first six you could get was the 240 cin than the 300.
ОтветитьThey should of eco boost the straight 6 architecture. No mile long timing chain keep the seven bolt main bearing set up. Could of saved Ford a ton of money on warranty and customer satisfaction issues.
ОтветитьI have a 79 with the 400 in it. Gets better gas mileage than anything else I've owned
ОтветитьThe 351 and the 400 are complete dogs because Ford made them that way! EPA BS! 8.4 to 1 compression, low performance—everything leads to a POS gas-guzzling dog! The 2 motors can be woken up and become complete beasts! With the proper machining and parts, the 400 can almost match a 68 to 71 460 in HP and Torque, and the 351 can almost become a Cleveland! Of course, you could seriously race either if you wanted to put in the money and time to make it so! IMO. where Ford dropped the ball was not putting a 385 series motor in the F-250 and bigger trucks, and tweaking it for performance! I had a 69 Lincoln 460-4BBL motor in my 79 F-250, 4" lift & 35's. The only performance anything I added was a Weiand Intake, Edelbrock 750, and a MSD Ignition, deep sump oil pan, and an HV oil pump, that's it! I had to help move a Child Care Center, and with a loaded 22ft trailer, I was getting 12- 15MPG! That 460 was a BEAST! I could burn rubber in 4x4!
ОтветитьGone by '79, but I was always a fan of the big FE motors, 390/428.
Ответить79 my favorite year of ford trucks beautiful vehicles the 460 is by far my favorite then the 351 Windsor and finally 302 and 300
ОтветитьI think I've owned all of them except the 460, quite a few 351M, and my biggest gripe was mileage. My small block Chevy stuff from the same era easily did like 50% better
ОтветитьWhat is your favorite engine from 70s Ford trucks???
Ответить
