How a Combat Veteran Built a Property Management Business in 4 States (& channel intro)

From an Army XO (Executive Officer) with the 501st Military Intelligence Battalion to CEO of Mars Hill Realty Group, here's the story of how I got started. My name is Edward and this is actually part 2 of me trying to combine my passion for real estate and my secret love for videos by putting together a YouTube channel. I first attempted this 10 years ago when I started my company, Mars Hill Realty Group in Georgetown, TX.

Since that first video I’ve been able to do a lot more than just create a logo for the company. My original intention was to grow Mars Hill into a full service brokerage, but if you do the math, 10 years ago was right after the financial crisis of 2008 and real estate guys like myself were starting to get out of the business left and right. Not the best time to recruit. Instead, I ended up, by accident, growing the property management side of Mars Hill Realty and we now have over 20 people on our Mars Hill Team spread out over Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., Wisconsin, New Jersey, Canada and the Philippines.

In this video, I thought it would be neat to give you a brief background of how I got into real estate. And then I’m just going to introduce some of topics you’ll see on this channel.

I went to college at the University of Rochester on an ROTC Scholarship. The Army denied my educational delay to go to law school and, instead, sent me to Germany as a Military Intelligence officer. I deployed to Kosovo, Saudi and Iraq with 5/7 ADA PATRIOT Battalion, 501st MI Battalion, and 4th Infantry Division respectively.

After 5 years, I transitioned out and jumped into real estate. First year of real estate, was super difficult: working 80+ hours/week, sold air purifiers on the side, and attended free real estate open house events for the food and prizes just to make it!

Eventually, my veteran owned business got established and consistent over the next 5-7 years. I started managing other properties and transitioned my buy/sell real estate business to my brother Edwin (Check him out at Edwinluilistings.com). I moved to VA about 6 years ago to help start a church but instead started a family farm instead! Now Mars Hill manages almost 350 residential units in TX, VA, MD and DC.

We’ll be interviewing other property managers and creating a Vlog to give you the inside scoop on how I plan to take Mars Hill from 350 units and scale to 1000. After watching this Vlog, that may convince you not to do property management at all and just hire it out!

2. REAL ESTATE INVESTING
I’ll also be sharing with you my experience with other real estate investments like long term rentals that I personally own, short term vacation rentals (airBNB)…and I am also in the middle of purchasing my first home to flip (BRRRR strategy) so pretty excited to bring you along in that journey.
