In Scylla Odysseus did not decide who dies - he told Eurylochus to light 6 torches. Basically he made Eurylochus choose who died, without letting him know that was what he was doing. That said, during Mutiny you said that Odysseus is 100% in the wrong. He's not. Its a lot more nuanced than that. He even mentioned that Eurylochus would have done exactly what he did, and Eurylochus did not deny it. Not only that, but on the island when Eurylochus fucked up the crew pretty much IMMEDIATELY go back to calling him captain. Them Mutinying there was understandable, but clearly no one else had the ability to lead the crew better than him.

Something hit me the other day like a ton of bricks, and I was reminded of it when you pointed out he sees Penelope, "the version that was presented to him by the Sirens." Sirens were known to sing men to their doom, luring them from their ship by showing them their hearts greatest desire. For Odysseus, he sees getting to his wife and being with her as what will make all this suffering bearable, being in her arms will take all the suffering away.

And while he loves and wants to see Telemachus, his wife has always come first

The thing abt the crew is they're supposed to be a representation of how ordinary humans who just struggle to live would react to the situations theyve been put in. On their end, they don't know wtf is going on in odysseus' head, so they get scared after deaths start happening when it's never happened during the trojan war ("I took 600 men to war and not one of them died there"), and then they dont trust him anymore bc all they've seen so far since the start of their voyage home was ody taking L after L. They're all basically feeling like desperate rats on a sinking ship. They hold on bc they think, "That's our captain and friend", but after Scylla is when they break. "We can't trust him anymore when we tried our best to trust him despite our mistakes and doubts". I think that's why Ody despite the betrayals still doesn't hate them, he understands where they're coming from and he still loves them, unfortunately he loves his family more. They're all just desperate to go home and have made dubious decision in the process, including Ody himself

I've heard a lot of people bash the crew for their decision to kill the cow, and it seems clear to me those people have never gone without food...

Now, to be clear, I myself have never been starving. I lead a privileged life, in a "first world" country. And because I am incredibly fortunate, I've never gone long without food. HOWEVER, I enjoy reading a lot of non-fiction, and I have read numerous grimly detailed accounts over the years about lost expeditions, remote plane crashes, and shipwrecks. Oftentimes, the narrative is penned by survivors or even the victims of starvation themselves, when journals and similar written accounts are found. Familiarize yourselves with the effects of hunger, TRUE hunger, before you judge these men.

If they didn't light the torches, Scylla would have taken six men at random. Some of whom might have been rowers, in which case the ship would be slowed and she might have a chance to grab six more. Of course, Odysseus also made sure that he, personally, would not be one of the ones eaten, and tried to arrange it so that Eurylochus would be.

It's important to note that for Eurylichus in the second half of Mutiny, he's given up for the most part. For him, the choice is between a painful death via starvation, or potentially incurring the wrath of some God. An easy choice to a starving man.

Well, the main reason Odysseus' isnt home yet is because he told the Cyclops his name
Poseidoon would not have sent that storm, or killed 500+ of his men, & he wouldnt be "on the run from Poseidon" (and thus need sneaky paths like Scylla's lair) if he had not revealed his name

Death toll:
In Survive, 12 men were killed by the Cyclop.
In Ruthlessness 545 men were killed by Poseidon.
In Circe saga, Elpenor died when ge got drunk and fell off the roof.
In Scylla, 6 men were killed by Scylla (through Odysseus' sacrificing them).
And in Thunder Bringer, the rest, 36 men, were killed by Zeus (also by Odysseus' choice).

But the dodo bird and the cliff joke made me laugh.

What I like about EPIC, is that you can totally understand both points of view. Odysseus was in a tight spot. If he told his men that going through Scylla would sacrifice six men... would they give up? where they would go? So I can understand not saying anything. It's not moral, it's not correct, but he is so desperate to get back home that he put his goal before his men, as wrong at it is. For Eurylochus is comprensible to be pissed off and start a mutiny, Odysseus told him to light up six torches, making him choose without knowing who would die. Then tired and starved they reach an island and decide that they have to eat, damn the consequences.

The thing is... both made errors until this point. Odysseus for doxing himself, and then Eurylochus doubting his captain in front of the crew, not trusting him and opening the wind bag when we were so close to home, betraying his trust. We could say... they are just a man?

Zeus is the big big man, yes. He is king of the god, and such, but he is also god of judgement. So, since they went against a god (Helios, former god of the sun before apollo, who threatened to take out the sun into the underworld if the killer of his cattle was not punished) he is whom comes to judge, despite his status. Plus, him being king and odysseus being king, much like the first song with the infant, he has a thing about wanting to make odysseus chose himself, the king, over anyone else. Hence his choice again here.

In the Odyssey, Odysseus was given two ways to get home. One way was through the lair of Scylla, and Scylla has a cost. He had to sacrifice a man for each of Scylla's heads, or all of them would die. The other way to get home would be to go through Charybdis which would also kill his entire crew. Ody really had no choice, it was either sacrifice the 6 men, let everyone die, or just... Stop trying to go home. So I don't really agree with the "Odysseus is in the wrong" in this case honestly. Technically one could argue that all of this happened because of Eurylochus.

Ответить
@ZeroTheOtter
@ZeroTheOtter - 01.12.2024 18:40

Yes, ody had to sacrifice 6 men otherwise they would have all died. Scylla is basically blind but can sorta sense the light front eh torches which gave her targets to follow

Also up until that point ody has done everything he can to ensure the survival of his crew to the best of his abilities. It might have been his choice to let the cyclops live but pretty much every other obstacle in their way was caused by his crew. Who opened the bag bringing them straight to Poseidon? Whose idea was it to run at Cierce? Whose idea was it to start a mutiny and kill the cow? ery. Arguably he caused more deaths than anyone here, it’s no wonder why Ody would grow tired.

Brilliant reaction as always. Its always amazing to see how you react and feel with each new song. Of the people I've watched react to Scylla you are one of the few who picked up on the 6 sacrifices so quickly. I also kept having myself reacting to your comments saying just wait till the next song/line hahaha. I can't wait to see how you feel about the next Saga.
A little side note btw; in the official animatic of Thunder Bringer Odysseus and his crew were on the ship when Zeus shows up and does his thing. So when it ends Ody has fallen into the sea with his ship destroyed and slowly sinks down as the animatic ends. I mention this because of a future song.

Eurylochus by the end of Mutiny basically admits he's suicidal. He see's his options as either all of the men slowly rotting away, or taking a risk and getting struck down quicker.

Also, when they killed the cows Eury says they're starving and he's given up on making it home- they still might not have all made it all the way to Ithaca.
