I have been shouting a similar message since 2003 when I found Christ. The norm of Christianity can deter the lost, but this message is as pure as I Can Only Imagine. Thank you!

You don’t know how much God has used this song of yours to help me… It’s been a powerful anthem for me in my fight against my Religious OCD/Scrupulosity. This song came into my life years ago when I needed it most, not too long after the severe onset of my OCD. I was fourteen years old when I was diagnosed; I had just given my life to God. I’m turning twenty two next month. :)

OCD has almost always been classified as an anxiety disorder — and it is, a debilitating one — but it is also nicknamed the “doubting disorder,” because it is the doubt that causes the immense psychological pressure and fear. It thrives on uncertainty, on an endless string of “What If’s.” It’ll take whatever you love and attempt to destroy it, so it’s no surprise it came for my relationship with God.

Every time I opened the word of God, listened to a sermon or entered a church, I came away feeling anxious and ashamed. Everywhere I looked, a million accusations came alive in my mind (this was mainly in the Old Testament Law, which it took me a long time to learn God only sent us long after for our own benefit, so that until Jesus came, we’d be capable of seeing what we couldn’t on our (because our hearts are deceitful) that we needed a savior: Him, and be saved. The Law was never meant to make us feel miserable or condemned. It was a safety precaution, a flashing neon sign of His love for us, He loved us so much He didn’t want early humans that preceded Jesus to never know they needed a savior and perish. Jesus was the true and ultimate fulfillment of the promise, of salvation. The law was our “guardian/jailer,” until Jesus.)

I felt a lot like Jesus wandering in the wilderness, the enemy hurling out-of-place scriptures to tempt or wound Him. Only Jesus is always prepared and knows when His own word is being twisted.

Religious OCD in particular tells me that I’ll never be good enough, makes me doubt that my salvation is true or tells me that I’m going to yo-yo in and out of salvation from moment to moment based on my outward behavior or thoughts I can’t control, that I must be stoic and legalistic and miserable and check off a million boxes to remain loved and forgiven, and because I’m obviously not perfect, I’ll arrive at the conclusion: I’m doomed. At the very least, it’ll tell me that God must be sick and tired of me because I’m not good enough and any affection He has for me has been severely hampered by my unworthiness.. It’s kind of like I have a Pharisee in my head, arguing with Jesus.

So you can imagine how hard these lyrics have hit me in my weakest moments and darkest valleys. I have prayed, sang and wept over this song in some of the hardest of them. I’ve even learned the dance moves, haha.

God has used these lyrics to remind me of the deep abiding, unconditional love He has for me and ALL of us; how perfectly He loves us even though we are not and cannot be perfect (until the day His work is finished and we have been fully renewed and redeemed.)

God has used you in a powerful way in my life and I couldn’t be more thankful to you both for reminding me in my weakest moments to LET GO and STOP trying and failing, toiling and striving to be an impossible standard of perfect and just accept that there were NO STRINGS ATTACHED when He saved my soul and I’m covered in His love and grace forever. I’m so grateful for the God we all get to know :) <3 Thank you for always reminding me. ❤ May God continue to bless you both!

Call me crazy but I thumb my nose at.conventional religion and just try my best to love everyone without putting an asterisk by their name. This song shows the God I know. You don't have to be perfect, just be.... accept Christ. You got this.
