So, can someone explain what the heck the Dow is? I hear it mentioned all the time but never really understood what it means.

I watch it for buying opportunities. Similar to how I might read the Sunday paper to see if my favorite food is going on sale at the store.

Thanks for explaining why we still talk about the Dow-Jones even though it's pretty irrelevant as an indicator, and for Adam Davidson's quote about it being an "anxiety amplification device." That's probably why it's still around -- it attracts attention. :-(

How about investing in dow john index fund?

I don't understand why the DJIA is even used anymore; just use a total-market index and be done with it--way more accurate indicator of the market as a whole because that's what it is. Nasdaq seems even dumber.

Can anyone explain to me how stocks replicate the DOW to a “T”?I get it’s an average, but I look at my stock going down and see the Dow going down. And as soon as I see the Dow going up even a few points, mine does as well.

This is why it is Wrong that a Single Company owns the DOW. In this case Rupert Murdock. I see where they are now featuring an "Implied Dow Opening" which could be trying to "STEER a BULL Market if so inclined.
