I once played a campaign where is was a throw away joke that there was an ancient Crystal Dragon following us around, just curious about what we were up to.
It didn't contribute anything, except tripping an orc that was chasing us over a cliff and whispering "That's your one".

It added so much fun to the game, we had no idea if the dragon was watching us at the time or not and so would try to include it in our group huddles and talking to the air.
