I originally wrote the lyrics as a poem which was inspired by a cross on the side of a highway that I used to pass while making a frequent long trip in the early 90s. The lyrics are below:

Can you see the crosses
lined up on the highway
Can you see the crosses
cover them with flowers

White lines race before you
always coming faster
Every time you hit the gas
they turn into a blur

Can you see the wreckage
burning on the highway
Can you hear them screaming
as they’re drowning in their tears

Mind it starts to wander
Do you hear the static
Radio is playing
but your miles down the road

Theres a blood made river
flowing to the gutter
softens up the dirt
where crosses soon to go

Can you see the crosses
lined up on the highway
Can you see the death
or just a sunny day
or just a sunny day
