russia lost initiative with this Jeddah agreement. good. now they want to play "oh we will refuse anyway" to trump give them something, test his patience (he does not have any). russians are good manipulators, they will be creative. i dont know if they hired a narc-specialized team of psychologists, they will need it. trump needs his ceasfire trophy, or will be tempted to show force otherwise, and possibly show in on the russians when ge goes nuts next time, i.e. tomorrow. russia may want to delay the ceasefire on Friday, hope US gusn continue to flow, and Europe gets time to arm and rearm. this is good for Europe, and it is better for Ukraine too if there is time. russia needs to nornalize relations with US, make money again. it is a very thin line with trump. lifting sanctions, or not get more, is a higher priority for russia, they may demand this on Friday from trump, in exchange of ceasefire. it would be smart. this wont change dramatically the rearmament race bw Europe-Ukraine and allies vs russia, but it would put russia in a slightly better position not to collapse within months.

In a way you can argue Russia rejecting this ceasefire is the best thing for Ukraine and the worst thing for Russia.

Because in the words of Marco Rubio; Russia rejecting the ceasefire makes it clear that Russia is not serious about peace, that it is not genuinely interested in making any kind of concessions in the pursuit of peace, and thus it is simply NOT Ukraine that is the true obstacle to peace. The structure of the offer also heads off any Russian attempt to extract concessions for the ceasefire; as the condition free ceasefire is meant to demonstrate a willingness to make make concessions to allow for the actual negotiations to end the war.

Based on Trump's own comments this really leaves him one viable avenue; increasing sanctions on Russia and continuing Biden's support for Ukraine or doubling down on it. What this whole episode has done is allowed Trump to look at the pro-Russian parts of his constituency or people in his circle and say, "We tried making peace with Russia but they didn't want anything but an unconditional Ukrainian surrender."

Trump is also certainly not the type to take kindly to Russian dismissal of the offer he put so much effort and public capital into producing in the face of so much bad press. It just makes it the most politically unviable for Trump to do much but follow Biden's example on Ukraine even if he wanted to do otherwise.

She's absolutely right. Russia holds all the cards right now. They just evicted the Banderites out of Kursk and are in Sumy right now. The Russians occupy 98% of the Donbas. Why the hell should they agree to a ceasefire? Meanwhile, the tyrannical regime in Kiev is continuing to drag men off the streets. Russia dictates the terms. This is not Russian propaganda.

@Lavrov Nobody in Europe called Russia an enemy in the year 2000. But now that Russia meets all the criteria of an enemy, now we call Russia an enemy, and we have the right to do so. I also dislike the story of "NATO came closer and closer to Russia". France, Italy, Germany and the UK did not move towards Russia. They were always friendly to Russia, even when Putin 2014 decided to go down in history. Nobody can blame the states closer to Russia for feeling increasingly insecure over the last 30 years and gradually joining NATO. They certainly didn't do this to expand further east and also not because they see themselves as natural enemies of Russia. But that is the tragedy of every aggressor. He sees himself constantly surrounded by enemies. It will be a long time before the countries west of Russia are ready to resume normal neighborly relations with Russia and, understandably, Ukraine will be among the last to do so. Russia must be clear that it alone is to blame for this hostile atmosphere. And Russia must realize that Ukraine, even more than the Baltic states or Sweden and Finland, wants to join NATO and also wants to have troops from friendly countries stationed on its territory. Nobody wants to station peacekeepers in Russia. So stay calm.
