The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever calls others to guidance will have a reward like the rewards of those who follow him, without that detracting from their reward in any way. And whoever calls others to misguidance will have a burden of sin like the burden of those who follow him, without that detracting from their burden in any way .”

(Narrated by Muslim, 2674)

I believe titling the show as "Social Singapore " offends Singaporeans the most as it does not reflect the lives of the majority young Singaporeans, especially when it looks a lot like "Hollywood Singapore" or in the local context, "Atas Singapore". "Code-switching" is a social skill most Singaporeans use only if the situation require us too. If it is a bunch of friends hanging out, we would be speaking in Singlish or our most comfortable accents at the very least. This may not apply to all the cast members, but when cast/s are caught "code-switching" even when interacting with our dear local hawkers or other Singaporeans, it can really come off rather snobbish and well, "fake".

However, I would say that the show did portray "first world problems" quite accurately. If we are Singaporeans living and working in Singapore, we definitely have "first world problems" for the very fact that Singapore is a "first world country". Every individual has different issues based on different societal class, family and financial backgrounds, gender etc. Yet, there is a real and increasing phenomena of anxiety and depression amongst young Singaporeans, due to family's pressure and expectations,

we are still Singaporeans who live in Singapore which is a developed country, considered "first world" too. So, it will be odd if a Singaporean living and working in Singapore do not have some kind of first world problems. Hence, I would say that the show did portray "first world problems" of a developed country, quite accurately.

In particular to Sukki, I applaud her for being the most authentic one, in my opinion.Even with the suspicion of the show being scripted, or behaviours pretty conditioned, she is still by far the most authentic. I'm also very impressed in the way she handles criticisms. Whether or not the intentions of her co-stars are genuine or conniving, it is important to first assess inwardly by sieving out feedback from the criticisms and objectively analyse the performance as it is. At the same time, she reserves the space in how or when she would like to find out the intentions of her co-stars from what were being said. Presented with options, it is always better to hear it from the horse's mouth, instead of hearing it from elsewhere. And it shows me that she cares enough to give her co-stars that benefit of doubt, instead of subjecting herself to listen to "relayed" messages and be hurt in the process.

Critiques are harsher on her because of her invasive mannerisms as well as her inconsistencies and all-over-the-place chaos in her conversations. I'm still rooting for Sukki because she is so misunderstood in the way she presents herself. In reality, there are many people who are walking contradictions and they are not necessarily being pretentious or trying to be someone they are not. It is the struggle of humanity, the tug of war between our fears, traumas and insecurities v.s the potential and dreams we want to fight for ourselves. Especially so for performers and artistes, thoughts are ideas tends to be more fluid, yet expressed very deeply and passionately in an extroverted manner. I believe she did bare her heart to the show and audience and I hope we can have more empathy and compassion for someone who are slightly more emotional and sensitive.

So cheers to you, Sukki, for "taking one for the team", having to justify yourself so much when you happen to be the most authentic one! <3
