I' ve just heard today a wonderful quote from an Indonesian thinker "conscience is the alter upon which the spirit builds a dignified and sacred life." The Indonesian philosopher did not mentioned which conscience he refers to: of the individual or of those that have an impact of the individual's life. You see, it is terrible to be left alone twice!

Dr. Gore. Do you think we can glean anything good at all out of Hegel?

Also, the best definition of sociology I have encountered is: ‘the study of factors external to the individual that influence and organize human action and activity’. Thus, and in my experience, sociology is a method and takes no view in itself. Rather, it is the sociologist him/herself that takes a view. Being a Christian that knows the Bible positively effects a persons ability to study and succeed in sociology. It is the methodological study of the affect of good and evil behaviour in the world. I would define it in one sense as ‘the study of the principalities of the air’.

If you deny Kant's assertion that you Kan't reach God, then you are Pelagian and deny a central tenet of the Gospel. Where Kant went wrong is in thinking that God Kant reach man. If there's a "leap of faith" it is the Son reaching us. The Christian synthesis is the only viable solution to Plato vs Aristotle. The numinous is a People, 3 People, and One of them became man. This is marvelous in my sight.

Fantastic! Really good to have such a wide range of philosophers categorised in this way. Thank you so much, I've listened to about a dozen of your lectures so far and am really enjoying them.

Kent's classification of philosophers is a good guide for those who study the subject. Thanks Professor Gore.

Of course, "Survival of the Fittest" is a mischaracterisation of natural selection, and so any notions hinging on that as being the dogma are mistaken.

Darwin proposed that it was the characteristics of a population leading to greater reproductive success that drove the perpetuation of those characteristics within a population at the expense of other characteristics.

"Fittest" doesn't mean bigger, stronger or more Aryan. A blind cave fish is as "fit" as you or me in an evolutionary sense, since we wouldn't last long in an underground lake.

Kant, Hegel and (to a certain extent) Marx are not philosophers but theologians (or theologists) and their theologies informed their philosophies. Missing this point is detrimental in comprehending the imports of their theo-philosophizing. They succumbed to the grand error founded on transcendental illusions that keep the thought or consciousness in bondage through the oppressive categories of being (god, soul, morals) or metaphysics of war. The lecture is deceptive.
