The Unspeakable Acts of Zina Pavlou by Elena Kyriacou
Zina Pavlou has been invited to stay with her son Michalis and daughter-in-law Hedy under sufferance. Hedy in particular finds her curious 'peasant' ways a trial.
1954 and Zina is accused of killing Hedy. In flashbacks we see the lead up to her being charged and now, by her side, is Eva Giorgiou, who is her interpreter.
An engrossing novel of time and place when guilt was almost set in stone before even coming to trial, misogyny was rife and ways of dealing with people in custody left a lot to be desired. This story is based on a true story.
