The Trump administration has approved a federal waiver allowing Nebraska to ban the purchase of soda and energy drinks with SNAP benefits.

The policy takes effect in January 2026 and will impact 150,000 recipients. Similar waivers are being considered in other states, while some, like Texas, are pushing broader state restrictions. SNAP already prohibits items like alcohol and tobacco.
