Just a couple of notes. I don't know who the woman in profile with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. is, but it's not Joan. Also, I think you may be confusing two different places. She did have an apartment in New York in the 1940s where she would stay during her trips to the East Coast; I've seen a couple of colorized photos of that apartment in a magazine from the time. The penthouse, which she and husband Alfred Steele designed in the 1950s, was not a "retreat", but was their primary home. She sold the Brentwood mansion at some point after moving into the penthouse.

And of course don't mention that she was an abusive egomaniac who should never have adopted children. She's hardly an icon.

I met her once and still have the autograph she gave me. She was finishing dinner at a restaurant and was sipping coffee or tea. After every sip she touched up her lip stick. Then another sip and more lipstick. I got her autograph as she was leaving, she was so sweet.

I admire her ambition coupled with humility.

Humble beginnings to the out of lavish spending. Also. You hire interior decorators and artists to assist in all this. You may have an idea what you want but most likely will become a giant mess. These people were not trained in architecture, design or fashion. They were created by an industry.
