ОтветитьI'm not much of a fan of traditional "bulking-cutting" wisdom. I'd rather slowly gain 10 pounds (near-maintenance, small surplus) over a year than rapidly gain 20 (big surplus) then rapidly lose 10 (deficit) over two 6-month bulking-cutting phases.
You can definitely reach a point of limited returns, in terms of surplus magnitude vs lean mass gains. We can't "force-feed" lean mass gains in a linear fashion in a surplus, and a deficit obviously isn't optimal for lean mass gains.
It's true, but not the reality for most. The margin for error is much smaller at maintenance than when on a bulk.

Im ok with "maingaining" my way from 20% to 15% over a year, especially if its easier to program and I know Im not being hugely "sub optimal" (maybe just a little) along the way.

ОтветитьI think if most people aimed to eat at maintenance, they would be in a slight surplus accidentally and it would be a successful lean bulk. Even if you undereat, you wont be in such a deficit that muscle building would halt

Ответитьthe debate comes from targeted audiences. I've seen a lot of fitness influencers say that maingaining is a myth, these people tend to be skinnier and leaner and started out skinnyfat. The people that Greg tends to coach, since he charges a lot for it, are likely older and fatter, in which case all they need to do is stop eating and slim down. One audience needs to gain mass, the other already has the mass, they just need to turn it into lean mass.
If you're fat or previously fat, it is exponentially much harder to actively lose weight than it is to maintain, on top of that you are likely more prone to binging and cheating as well, which will probably make up the difference anyway.

ОтветитьIt’s just more difficult to make the gains in a slight surplus or maintenance as you have to be more dialed in on what you consume and your macros.
However for your average person unwilling to count macros or calories, it is much easier in the moment to bulk, get all the necessary macros, gain mass and let future you worry about the consequences of having to diet down again if you want to be leaner.
It’s kind of a short term vs long term situation and most of us choose short term.

I built 15 pounds of muscle and gained weight to keep the same 15% percentage of fat?
I do this all the time and it works.. I always gain muscle, get leaner/more stredded while my weight stays roughly the same, or I might gain a small bit. I notice once I get too lean, I stop getting stronger/don't gain muscle. The trick then is to bulk up, then maintain once you reach a certain body fat percentage. It's by far the healthiest, safest and most logical way to train

ОтветитьThis is a weird topic for me because I was definitely underrating before I started the gym. And I didn’t notice real change until I started eating a ton. I now make sure to get a surplus every day. It seems like a lot of food for me but I think I just never ate enough before this. I’m not exactly sure where maintenance is for me
